One of the most impressive of the old steam locomotives still running is the Cumbres-Toltec line that runs between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. The billowing smoke, chugging of the steam-powered pistons driving the wheels, and rhythmic clicking of the steel wheels on the rails brings a bygone era to life. The sights, sounds, and smells of a vintage coal-fired steam train are a stark change of pace from the rush-rush modern modes of travel. It was the soot and cinders from this train, incidentally, that did in my fancy camera... the remainder of the trip was photographed with a Pentax 928 "point and shoot" camera that I picked up in Durango as an emergency replacement.
