Sun. 22 Went to Sunday School. In the afternoon Fred Johnston, Ralph Holmes, Lloyd Gifford and myself went to the lake. Rowed all around the lake. They took a mandolin, fiddle, and guitar and we came home by the way of Sylvan. Played for the benefit of the metropolis. Every one stared for all their worth at us. Rained on the way coming home but we had the side curtains on and did not get wet. Tues 24 Zoe BeGole, Howard Boyd, Arthur and myself went to the lake and took our chickens. Coming home we draped the buggy with dogwood blossoms. Was down to the Masonic Hall, helping them drape it in the evening. Wed. 25 The Masons had a banquet in the G.A.R. Hall and I went there and had ice cream and stayed there all of the evening. Tues. 31 Effas twenty-first birthday. Mamma hired a girl. Had a head-ache in the morning. Was over to Margarets part of the evening. June 1898 Tues. 14 Arthur and I cleaned the buggy, harness, and horses after school Sat. 18 Mabel Brooks, Bess. Winans, Carl Vogel and myself went to Stockbridge. Field Day between Stockbridge and Chelsea. Had a lovely time all day. Got home at about eleven oclock. Papa, Mamma, and Arthur went to Detroit. Mon. 20 Had an examination in English Composition in the afternoon. Went to the Graduating Exercises in the evening. Mamma, Papa, and Arthur got home in the morning. Mamma hired Nora Daily Sun. 26 Went to town and Ransom drove the team back and brought Mamma down in the evening. Had dinner at Mamies and stayed there till after six oclock. First time I had seen her in nearly nine weeks as she had been sick eight weeks that day. Tues. 28 Painted some chairs. Lillie and Charlie and the children got home from Iowa. July 1898Mon. 4 Quiet Fourth for the lake. The greatest celebration was the news that Cerveras fleet was destroyed. Aunty Gates and Mr. Gates and Ernest were up for the afternoon. Tues. 5 News that Cervera himself was captured. Edith Bacon, Enid Holmes, Grace Bacon and myself started for harvest apples, from there we went to Rapps ruins of his house, then to Glaziers, and then to Linna Runcimans. We stayed there to dinner and had lots of fun. About five oclock most of the children on camp went over to Mr. Glaziers in bathing. Fri. 8 Florence Martin, who was staying a Mr. Holmes cottage, Edith Bacon, Babe Noyes, Ralph Holmes and myself started for Grass Lake about three oclock in the afternoon, and when we got there a friend of Ralphs told us Wolf Lake was but four miles farther on so we drove over there and had our supper. We started from there at eight oclock and got home at 20 min. past eleven so that when we got home our folks were awfully worried as we said we were going to be home at eight oclock and Papa came out to meet us. Fri. 15 Effa went to Chelsea. Mamie Fletcher had a baby. Mon. 18 Pick Plass, Aunt Amy and I went to Chelsea in the morning. Saw Mamies baby. Was over to Mr. Geo. Kempfs cottage in the evening. Sat. 23 Papas fifty-fourth birthday. Guss., Arthur, and I took Ransom, Andsons Goulde, and Julin Klein over to Sugarloaf Lake to camp. Thurs. 28 Ransom and the boys broke up camp over at Sugarloaf Fri. 29 Pick, Effa, Arthur, Josie Hoag and myself went in bathing. Effa, Josie, Arthur and I went over to Sugarloaf hill in the morning. Sat. 30 Colder. Mamma, Pappa and Aunt Amy went to Chelsea. Played croquet in the afternoon Sun. 31 Arthur and I went to Chelsea in the morning after Ransom and took Nora down. Read in the afternoon. August 1898 Tues. 2 All went over bathing in the morning. Arthur and I went downtown after Aunt Angie. The camp gave a surprise party for Mr. Scott in the evening. Forty Eighth birthday Wed. 3 Leon Kempfs fourteenth birthday and my fifteenth. He and a friend of his from Jackson were here to supper. Ernest was up in the evening. Sun. 7 Went downtown after Ransom and Uncle Jerome and Romey came up, too. Wed. 10 Went to town after Mr. and Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Lew Winans and took them back in the evening. Nell Armstrong Burns and her husband came in the evening (Could this be Ransom Armstrongs daughter Elena?) Fri. 12 Got Papa on the tandem with Mr. Burns. Effa rode to town on the tandem with Mr. Burns. Mr. Neb Cooks folks came and spent the day. Sat. 13 Nell Armstrong Burns started an autography pillow for me. Played cards in the morning Rome came up to see his father and spend Sunday while Papa went down and took his place in the store. Sun. 14 Rome went downtown after Papa and Ransom. Ransom had a terrible head-ache at night so he stayed up here at the lake
Wed. 17 John Fenimore, Uncle Decatur and Aunt Charlotte and Jay King and his father came to the lake. Effa had a tooth ache and went to Chelsea. Jerome B. & Louisa Armstrong Sat. 20 Aunt Amy and Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Decatur went away. Was up on Noyes porch all of the afternoon. September 1898 Thurs. 1 Ransom and I built a hen coop in the afternoon. Terribly hot. Rome went home Sun. 4 Ransom and I went riding and took a lot of pictures in the morning. Went to the Methodist Church with Aunty Gates in the evening and Mr. Edmunds preached. Thurs. 15 Effa went to Ann Arbor to look for rooms. Sat. 17. Effa came home on the late train at night. Lovely day Wed. 21. Will Depew died, (Charlies brother) Was up to Zoes in the evening studying Latin with her. Sun. 25 Lovely day. Went to Sunday School. Ernest was up in the evening. Harlans seventh birthday. Mon. 26 Effa started back for college. Zoe was down in the evening and we studied a long time. Mowed the lawn after school. October 1898 Sat. 1 Rained a little. Harold Glazier and Arthur had a mudeum and took in sixty cents. Received a letter from Effa. Sun. 2 Charlie, Lillie, the two children and Arthur and I went up to the lake. Lonely Sunday without Effa. Mon. 3 Awfully warm. After school I went with Mamie Fletcher to find a girl but was unsuccessful. Thurs. 6 Guss. was down in the evening and we studied Algebra, then went up by the Methodist Church. Cousin Carrie and Elmore were here and spent the day. November 1898 Tues. 15 Marion Armstrong Fletcher was four months old. Zoe was down in the evening and we studied Latin and Algebra. Mamma, Pappa, and Ransom went to the lake so Nora, Arthur and I were here alone. December 1898 Sun. 4 Arthurs twelfth birthday. I read all of the evening January 1899 Thurs. 5 Ransom started for the West. Was over to Matie Watsons in the evening. Cold Fri. 6 Papa went to Coruna. Miss McCloskie, Mr. Howlett and Mr. Dancer were up in the evening Sat. 7 Cold. Wrote a letter in the morning and read in the afternoon. Mamma went to Ann Arbor on the four and she and Papa came home on the seven. Mon. 9 Papa went to the lake. Effa went back to Ann Arbor to college. Went to the Passion Play in the evening. Received a postal from Ransom at Coin, Iowa. March 1899 Mon. 6 Arthur was taken sick. Tues. 7 Arthur continued to be sick still Wed. 8 Arthur still sick. Lovely day Fri 10 Effa came home. Aunty Gates and Effa stayed up all night with Arthur Sat. 11 Arthur is worse. Effa and I went downtown in the evening Sun. 12 Arthurs worst day. He is very sick. Dr. Dor of Ann Arbor came up to see him. Very sad day Mon. 13 Arthur is improving. Mrs Turnbell and Mrs Noyes stayed all night with him. Tues. 14 Rained. Mon. 20 Effa went back to college. Arthur sat up about two hours. Lovely day Tues. 21. Snowed. Arthur sat up quite a while. Arthur, Effa & Howard Armstrong Thurs. 23 Was over to Margarets a little while in the evening. Androus Goulde was up to see Arthur Fri. 24 Last day of school before our vacation. Arthur got a lovely box of chocolates from Harold. Lovely day. Tues. 28 Arthur passed a good day. Read most of the afternoon. Wed. 29 Arthur had an operation performed. He began improving immediately. Went down to a social at Lillies in the evening. April 1899 Mon. 3 School began after our week of Spring vacation. Lovely day. Heard from Ransom. Mr. Will Bacon was elected supervisor of the township. Wrote to Effa. Papa went to Vernon Wed. 5 Arthur had an operation performed. Was very weak afterwards. Read "Canoe Mates" Lovely day. Thurs. 6 Was over to Auntie Gates in the evening. Arthur felt some better. Lovely day. Fri. 7 Read "Canoe Mates" Arthur felt a great deal better. Went to Junior Social at the town hall. Mon. 10 Went up to Zoes in the evening. Arthur a great deal better. Perfect Spring Day Mon. 17 Ransoms twenty-sixth birthday. Lovely day Tues. 18 Wrote to Archie Workman in Sallcoats, Scotland. Wrote for a picture with ? Anne soap wrappers. Arthur took two or three steps. Wed. 19 Went out bycicling in the evening. Arthur walked way across the sitting room. Sat. 22 Stayed home all day. Arthur did not feel quite as well. Uncle George came on the eleven oclock train. Mon. 24 Effa went back to Ann Arbor. I was down to Enids in the evening. Arthur passed a very good night. Lovely day. Tues. 25 Spent my evening over to Margarets. Arthur felt much better Sat. 29 Lillie, the children, and Papa and I went up to the lake. Arthur went out riding in a wheeled chair. Pressed some plants for Botany. May 1899 Mon. 1 Zoe and I studied in the evening. Arthur walked over to Auntie Gates. Thurs. 4 Josie Hoag was married to Louis L. Ebert of Detroit. Effa went to the wedding. Nina Crowell was bridesmaid. Mon. 8 Papa and Uncle George drove to Corunna and Aunt Amy went on the cars. Sun. 14 Arthur went to Sunday School for the first time. Rained in the afternoon. Sun. 21 Mamma and I went to church in the morning. Papa and Mamma, Arthur and myself drove up to the lake and back in the afternoon. First time Arthur went driving since his sickness. Mon. 22 Uncle Decatur came down from Parma and Papa and he went up to the lake to fish. June 1899 Sat. 10 Mamma, Papa, Arthur and I went to town and I got me a new suit, new shoes and some other new clothes. In the afternoon I drove the men over to Crooked Lake and then I came home and worked on Botany Sun. 11 Mamma, Arthur, and I came down from the lake. Mamma went to church Mon. 12 I went to Ann Arbor and then Effa and I came to Cadillac. Arrived here at twelve oclock. P.M Tues. 13 All day we prepared for Emas wedding. I went after some maiden hair fronds in the woods. Wed. 14 Ema and Jack Frost were married. We served rice to them at the train when they left for Rockford Thurs. 15 Rested up after the wedding. Mrs. And Miss Valentine spent the evening with us. Tues. 20 Went down town in the evening. Cora received a letter from Ema. Sun. 25 Went to Methodist church in the morning and Cora and I went to their Childrens Day Exercises in the evening. Thurs. 29 We started from Cadillac about one oclock P.M. and arrived at Corunna between six and seven. Lovely day. Fri. 30 Effa, Rolla, (Could this be Alva Davids Rolla?) Miss Burger and myself went through the coal mine in the morning. Went over to Owosso to a band concert in the evening. July 1899 Mon. 3 Rolla, Mr. Billimer and myself went down to the Shiawasee ? after frogs. Effa came back to Corunna. Thurs. 6 Sarted home. Papa met us in Ann Arbor on his way to Cadillac as Cora was dangerously ill. We had dinner at the Jenneys. Len (?) and I went out and spent the afternoon very enjoyably and then Effa and I started (?) on the Grand Rapids in the evening for Chelsea. We found Mamie Armstrong at Lillies and we all came to the lake that night. Fri. 7 Rained. Mama, Aunt Amy, Arthur and myself drove to Chelsea in the afternoon. Fri. 14 Uncle Jerome, Aunt Lou, Louise and Carl came to visit us. Sun. 16 I went to town in the afternoon and heard Mr. Bailey preach. Zoe and Louise Armstrong went with me. Carl Armstrong & Louise E. Armstrong Son & daughter of J.B. & Louisa Armstrong Wed. 19 Ralph Holmes, Leigh Palmer, Carl Armstrong and I stayed at the lake all day and fooled around. I went to town in the evening. Sat. 22 Mr. West, Graces (Armstrong) husband, came. All of the men went over to Crooked fishing. Sun. 23 Very hot day. We hardly stirred off from the porch. Orrin and Ralph played in the evening on their guitar and mandolin. Wed. 26 Louise, Enid, Effa, Arthur and I went to town in the morning. Lovely day Sat. 29 Mr. west, Carl, Louise, Enid and Howard Holmes and Arthur and I spent the morning over at Prospect and driving around Waterloo. August 1899 Tues. 1 Lovely day. Mamma and Papa started for Frankfurt, Arthur for Cadillac and Aunt Amy for Corunna. Dull Day at camp Wed. 2 I took Uncle Js people to town and then I came up to the lake afterwards and then went down and stayed all night. Thurs. 3 Uncle Jos family, Leigh Palmer and I startedin a party for Niagara Falls. Missed Uncle Jos people at Detroit. Had my first glimpse of the falls at about half past five. Stayed at Niagara all night. My sixteenth birthday. It was an elegant day. Fri 4 Stayed at Niagara all day and saw the sights. In the evening we all went down to Buffalo and Mamie and Aunt Lou went on further East. I stayed at about the finest hotel I have ever been to. Sat. 5 Came back to Niagara. Started for Detroit at 5:32 and arrived there at about one oclock but I went and roused Uncle James (Goodell) up and stayed there all night. They told me that Geneveive and Mr. Loring were married on my birthday. Sun. 6 In the morning I went downtown with Roe. In the afternoon Uncle Jame and I went walking and we all went to church in the evening. Mon. 7 I spent the morning with Pick and in the afternoon I started for Ann Arbor. I stayed there all night at Mr. Jenneys. Wed. 16 Aunt Lou and Mamie came back from New York Sat. 19 Kittie and Joe Winiker came to the lake. Awful hot day. Mon 21 Effa, Kittie, Arthur, and I went to town. Uncle Jos family went home. Thurs. 24 Ransom came home after being away from home for over seven months. Fri. 25 Lovely day. Effa, Kittie, and I went and picked elderberries Sat. 26 Marjorie Freemans sixth birthday. Effa, Ransom, Kittie, Joe and I went down to Chelsea and had dinner at Lillies. Kittie and Joe went back to Detroit. Androus Goulde came back to the lake with us. I got a letter from Cora Lewis. September 1899 Mon. 4 Commenced school after our summer vacation. Miss Corech was our new preceptress. Commenced Greek to Professor Gifford Thurs. 14 Uncle Decatur and Aunt Charlotte came to our house to visit. Sept. 16 John Fenimore came to our house to visit in the morning and Effa came home in the afternoon. Mon. 18 Mr. Lewis Winans died. We came home from the lake to stay. Rained. Aunt charlotte and Uncle Decatur and John Fennimore went home October 1899 Wed. 4 Painted a wash stand. I got a letter from Louise Armstrong Sat. 21 In the morning I raked leaves and in the afternoon Lillie, the two children and myself drove over to Stockbridge to see Mamie. Sun. 22 stayed over to Mamies till afternoon and then drove home. Unt Sarah came with us. I saw Mrs. B. J. Howlett nee Miss carrie McCloskie. Tues. 24 Grandpa Tichenor died. I had a terrible headache all day. Thurs. 26. Grandpa Tichenor was buried. It would have been his nintey-seventh birthday November 1899 Wed. 22 Aunt Amy and Aunt Angie came to out house. We all went to the Baptist Fair in the evening. Thurs. 30 Thanksgiving Day. Mrs. Winans and Aunt Amy and Aunt Angie and Esther were the only ones out of our family to eat dinner with us. Old Mrs. Depew died. December 1899 Mon. 25 Christmas Very cold. I received a china clock, muffler, handkerchiefs and gloves, a pretty picture and a picture frame, and a U. of M. pillow. We spent our Christmas over to Stockbridge with Mamie and Alton. Our dinner consisted of chicken pie, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, squash, coffee, cabbage salad, angel food, crazy cake, hermits, chocolate cake, fruit cake, lemon, mince, and pumpkin pies, ice cream, pop-corn and candy. Mamma, Papa, Ransom, and Arthur came home that very night, but the rest of us stayed. Their springs broke when they were but a few miles out of town and they had to walk their horses all of the rest of the way home. Sun. 31 Estelle, Pearl, Arthur, Effa, Mamma, Ransom, Earnest Dancer, Androus Goulde and myself watched the old year out and new year in. we had a debate whether we were entering a new century or not, but decided that we were not. We all went to church in the mornbing. The girls thought Mr. Jones was fine. Edith Noyes was up to our house in the afternoon. |
