In the end of the 1980's the Prince and his advisors understood that they needed common people too touristing in there small country to still have the money flowing in in the future. They built this shopping center on the Nice side of the Monaco-Ville rock (where the palace is). You get there by a public elevator from next to where the road up to the palace from the harbour beguins. Before Fontvieille you couldn't buy anything without being robbed.
Carrefour
(cheapest food in town)
The "main attraction" in the shopping center is of course the Carrefour
supermarket. Being part of a french nationwide chain it has as low prices
as the rest of the Carrefours. Actually, it's the cheapest store in the
whole region of Menton-Monaco-Nice so go there! A little feeling of the
rich lifestyle has sneaked into Carrefour too. Don't be too surprised if you see a priceconscious
monegasque buying his twenty Moët Chandons to the little party right here!
Place d'Armes
This little square on the way from the port to Fontvieille has got a nice food market in the mornings. Fresh vegetables and fruits can be bought here. If you think markets is picturesque this is where you end your search for food, if it doesn't matter - continue the short distance to Fontvieille and the Carrefour supermarket.
