On the seashore of Yongdam-dong in Cheju City, Yongduam rises high as if it might suddenly take off and fly into the sky. That it resembles a dragon with its mouth open ready to roar is the reason why it is called Yongduam.
According to legend, a dragon envoy of the Dragon King was sent to Mt. Halla to pick a herb which would give eternal youth. But a mountain god shut into the sea, and only the head protruded above the sea. And it became Yongduam. According to another legend, once upon a time, a dragon spirit of a mountain in his mouth. The guardian spirit was angered, and shut the dragon who fell into the sea leaving only his head above water. The shape of the head is like that of a wailing dragon.
