Sicx - "Dead 4 Life"

Date: 2/4/01

------------Until recent re-release of this cd, not many people had heard of this cd. This is in fact Sicx’s debut cd and at one time, was very hard to get your hands on. Originally released in 1995, this cd came out just around the same time as Brotha Lynch Hung’s “Season Of Da Sicc” but if when you listen to the two it sounds like they were made years apart. This is the problem that plagues this cd throughout.
___If you are expecting to hear the same Sicx as on “If These Walls Could Talk” then think again, as this cd is nothing like it at all. The two sound completely different. Well “ITWCT” has your typical siccmade sound, “Dead 4 Life” sounds more like it made back when X-Raided’s “Psycho Active” was released. Most of the beats are sampled from one place or another and are for the most part, boring. Sicx’s lyrics are sharp as usual, but compared to his newer work, show how he has matured greatly since this release.
___The subject matter on this cd is much tamer than what you would expect from Sicx. If you are expecting to hear stories about baby eating and fish hooks inserted into pussies then think again. But that doesn’t take away from the overall cd. “Yo Bitch, My Bitch” is the first tight solo song on this cd. The chorus “Yo bitch, my bitch, is she poor or is she rich” is simple, yet catchy. “Mr. Policeman” deals with the mistreatment of minorities by cops and combines an up tempo beat with clever lyrics. “Niggaz Ain’t Shit” is a humorous song that deals about the troubles with girls. The beat on this one is really old school. “Momma Crack” is a more serious song and could have been the best on the cd if only is was a little longer than a minute long.
___In a way this cd is a letdown. The beats are very weak, especially compared to “Nigga Deep”, which also has an old school sound to it, but with much better beats. Compared to other work of its time this cd sounds really dated, as it sounds more like early rap cds of the 1990’s and not something that was released in 1995. Also, the lack of any appearances from Brotha Lynch Hung also is a disappointment. Even with a lack of good production, Sicx deliveries on the lyrical aspect. Though not up to par to his most recent work, this is an average first effort. By no means a spectacular cd, its a little above average. I guess I was just expecting more from Sicx on this one, because “ITWCT” blows this away in terms of production, lyrics, and overall quality. Unless you love that old school sound, this is one to pass up.
