Larne 3-1 Bangor 01 Feb 1997

Managerless Larne simply proved too strong for Bangor this afternoon and swept the visitors aside with three well taken goals. Larne were denied the opener after just one minute when McDowell's corner from the right was headed against the bar by McMahon. Adair, in the home goal, pulled off a fine save to block Green's 20-yard drive after 20 minutes. Two minutes later Larne took the lead. Johnston's ball into the left corner found McDowell, he brought the ball under control, then rifled his shot high into the net. Bangor were on level terms after 26 minutes. Coulter slipped the ball through to McPherson, he beat Simms, then drove a low cross into the box, where the unmarked O'Connell stooped to head in. The visitors almost edged in front on the half hour when O'Connell shook off McKinstry. His shot beat Adair but found the side netting. The first chance of the second period fell to Bangor. Picking up a Bailey pass inside the box McPherson turned to send in a thunderous drive which was just over the top. O'Connell should have doubled his tally on 61 minutes when he ran onto a Bailey pass only to mishit his shot which Adair saved comfortably. Miskelly kept Bangor in the game 15 minutes from time when he somehow managed to get a hand to a point-blank header from Hill. The Bangor keeper however could do nothing to prevent Larne's second seven minutes from time. A long ball from the back found Patton who brought the ball under control then hammered the ball past Miskelly into the corner. Larne made sure of full points in the dying seconds. This time Patton was the provider for Lowry whose diagonal shot beat the outstretched hand of Miskelly.
