Newry 2-2 Larne 05 Feb 97
A brilliantly struck 25-yard drive by Niall Courtney in injury time
saved Newry from defeat when they were held to a draw by visiting
Larne in a thriller which was watched by a huge crowd.
Newry looked to be heading for their first defeat since early
December when Larne hit them with a two goal blitz in a 3 minute
spell midway through the second half to take a 2-1 lead.
Newry had taken the lead a minute into the second half. Dessie
Gorman passed the ball out to David white on the right flank and the
winger's high ball into the Larne goal was miss timed by goalkeeper
Adair who tipped it into the net.
Newry became careless in defence and the writing looked on the
wall when Larne's fightback was rewarded in the 65th minute - Larry
McMahon running on ot a loose ball and scoring with a low drive.
Three minutes later Larne had their second goal to take the lead
when David Patton beautifully lobbed the goalkeeper. It was then
Newry's turn to fight back and eventually they were rewarded with
that last gasp goal
The team which played was:
Adair, Fullerton, Mellon, Johnston, McKinstry, Hill, Looney,
McDowell, Smyth, Patton, McMahon
Subs: Lowry, McConkey.
