Larne Ready to Greet First Lady - 27 Sep

August 26, 97 is a date Lyn Kernohan will never forget. On that day she gave birth to baby Rhianna and also became the first female secretary in the Irish League with Larne. "Yes, I was elected the same night that I had Rhianna," Lyn said today. "It was a double celebration although I was in no fit state to do any celebrating." Lyn replaced Bob Orr as secretary of the Inver Park club and is eagerly looking forward to her new post. "I'm very pleased to be secretary of Larne because I have been a supporter all my life," she said. "I think my father wanted a little boy when I was born to take to the matches with him, but since I was about three years of age he started taking me anyway and I was glad he did. "The connection did not end there either because I married a Larne player Harry Kernohan. "Harry played for nine years at Inver and now we take our sons to the games as well. "Our nine-year old boy loves his football and although he loves Manchester United, he likes Larne too. "Our four year old isn't into football that much at the moment and then of course there is Rhianna whom I'm sure will become a big supporter." The management team of Kel McDermott and now Frankie Parks are two football addicts and Lyn says she hopes to have an excellent working relationship with them. "I'm sure we will get on fine. It does not matter really if a secretary is male or female. The main thing is that the person can do the job." Early on this season Larne were involved in controversy when they were thrown out of the Wilkinson Sword League Cup for fielding an ineligible player. No doubt Lyn will be hoping such events do not occur during her time in office. She's already made a pretty eventful start. And as well as be a female first, she can always say she was the first person to have a baby and be appointed a football club secretary on the same night.

Ed's Note: Congradulations Lyn and we wish you all the very best for the future. Let's hope the Orr cock up's are a thing of the past.

Black out as Orrs in - 12 Sep

Johneen Black quits the club, Bob Orr is co-opted to the committee and Lynn Kernohan is appointed club secretary and the club become a limited company as they launch their new fundraising initiative - just another boring old week at Larne Football Club! News of Black's resignation from the post of chief executive will come as a shock to many people, though those of us in the know will appreciate that it has been coming for some time. "Due to pressure of business commitments, Johneen has stepped down. He feels he no longer has the time to devote to the club" stated club chairman Sam McCreadie. The chairman was reluctant to elaborate but confirmed also that Black connections are totally severed as he is no longer even on the committee. But welcomed back is former club secretary Orr. He was co-opted at Tuesday night's special general meeting. He had resigned his officer's position last month and his experience is clearly seen as an important asset. Kernohan had replaced Orr in a temporary capacity but she will now fill the role on a more permanent basis, the chairman admitting that there was a slight misunderstanding over her membership position in the club. "It's not even a story, really. There was a new family category introduced and we believed she was covered as a full member by that. But it was discovered in the last week or so that it did not. But she has now become a full member," McCreadie is thrilled at the prospect of the new era hoisting the Larne club away from it's debt-ridden past. "Since the AGM, we have considerably reduced the debt of Larne Football Club and I have no doubt we are on the right tracks with the new initiative. I hope now that the people of the district will get behind us" he said. Outlining the proposals was treasurer Jimmy Roberts. "The idea is to attract new investment into the football club. It will make no material difference to the man on the terrace but it will affect members" he explained. "We are creating new shareholder-style members. Initially we are offering shares in the club to existing life members and providing ordinary members with the opportunity to become life members by paying ?20 per month for 30 months. They will then be able to buy shares as well. "At a later date shares will be open to anybody and everybody agreed at a price to be agreed. That, in a nutshell is what this is all about" stated Roberts. Exciting times ahead at Inver Park then and the local community, especially in the business sector, is urged to get behind them. As chairman McCreadie continually points out, it's not just Larne Football Club - it's Larne's football club.

Editors note: A just reward to Mr Orr and his infamous exploits. One wonders what he may cost the club next. Why not give a new club other than Linfield, the chance to nick our best players or throw away another grand by misunderstanding the rules for fielding illegible players. Sometimes I think it'd be easier to support Bucna United- sigh.

Orr Quits over idiotic boob - 21 Aug

If he was to blame for the blunder that may needlessly cost cash-strapped Larne Football Club several thousand pounds, damaged their credibility and greatly embarrassed the club, secretary Bob Orr did the honourable thing. In fact, he took the only reasonable course of action open to him by resigning. That he did tender his resignation, albeit seemingly at the specific request of chairman Sam McCready, suggests - rightly or wrongly - that he has accepted responsibility for failing to register assistant manager Harry McConkey as a player when his contract ran expired at the end of last month. The one certainty in the whole sorry episode is that disaster struck the club when the Carrickfergus sports shop owner played against Cookstown United at the weekend whilst ineligible, this offence confirmed at an emergency meeting of the Irish League yesterday. The repercussions are that Larne have been fined ?1000 for fielding an ineligible player and they are expelled from the tournament, with Cookstown United awarded the first round tie and re-instated to play Linfield in the second round. There is, though, a glimmer of hope that the Inver Park club may yet receive half the gate receipts from Tuesday night's match. My information is that a recommendation to that effect is to be considered by the league management committee. Thus, the club may even finish up with a profit! The first indication of the offence for chairman Sam McCready came to light when he was met as he entered Windsor Park on Tuesday for the match against Linfield. "Irish League officials Gifford McConkey and Harry Wallace informed me that Harry's registration had run out on July 31 and we were thus guilty of an offence" explained a disconsolate McCready. "They explained that we would be liable to a fine of ?1000 and that we should probably have to forfeit the win over Cookstown. "But, given that it was well into the eleventh hour, they felt the match against Linfield should go ahead and the whole matter would be sorted out at an emergency meeting of the league on Wednesday morning. "I couldn't believe it and immediately headed to the dressing rooms to tell the players what the situation was. They already knew and the heads were down, they were disappointed and confused about it all. "Yet they went out and played the shirts off their backs against The Blues, their performance in the unfortunate circumstances filling me with pride" assured McCready who then explained how Orr's resignation came about. "Bob was adamant it's up to the manager to know whether or not a player is registered. But I firmly believe that, as with all other administrative duties, it's the secretary's responsibility and told him so" revealed McCready. "As chairman, I felt it was imperative that positive action was taken to show that we cannot be seen to tolerate a situation where the club has lost thousands of pounds of badly-needed money and, in the absence of a committee meeting, I asked him to resign. "It was a very costly mistake - a big fine and the possibility that we will have forfeited thousands more as our share of the gate money from the Linfield game and we can only hope that lessons have been learned" stated McCready.

McConkey Flunky costs Larne a Donkey 14 Aug

LARNE will today be thrown out of this season's Wilkinson Sword League Cup and fined  1,000 stg for fielding an ineligible player in the first round against Cookstown. The fact that they were beaten 5-1 by Linfield at Windsor Park in the second round last night is irrelevant because they were going to be expelled anyway. The Irish Football League today convened an emergency meeting to discuss the punishment and the implications of the administrative error. The domino effect from this is that Cookstown will now have to be reinstated in the competition - and that Linfield will have to play their second round tie all over again. As one would expect, the Blues are livid at having to play a fixture they should not be involved in, but if they refuse to play Cookstown they too will be ejected from the competition. It has been suggested that the game take place tomorrow night at Windsor Park, although Linfield will not agree to such a solution because it is only two days before they start their league campaign at Ards - and today work started on the international ground for next week's World Cup qualifier between Northern Ireland and Germany. Playing the match as soon as possible at a neutral ground is another possibility but surely the common sense option is to play the tie at Windsor on a free date after the international. The saddest thing about this fiasco is that it was Harry McConkey - Larne's player- coach - who was not registered to play in Saturday's victory over Cookstown. McConkey, 38 next month, was desperate to play last night because he thought it would be his last match at the international stadium. Indeed, he was stripped off and ready for action when he was told he could not turn out - because Larne would face another  1,000stg fine on top of the  1,000stg penalty they already face. "I could not believe it and was absolutely gutted when Iwas told about it. I was thinking this was my last chance to play on the hallowed turf and to be informed I couldn't was earth shattering," said McConkey today. "I had my jersey on and even offered to resign in although that won't happen now."

It is believed the authorities knew before the match about the situation - but decided to go ahead with the game for fear of irritating supporters who had travelledlong distances.

JUNIORS BACK AFTER LARNE DISMISSAL Larne were today thrown out of this season's Wilkinson Sword League Cup and fined 1000stg for fielding an ineligible player in the first round against Cookstown. The decision was reached at an emergency Irish Football League meeting today. Linfield's second round victory over Larne is now effectively null and void because the Blues will have to play junior side Cookstown in round two all over again. As one would expect the Blues are none too happy at having to play a fixture they should not be involved in but they will play the game because the alternative is that they too would be ejected from the competition if they refused to play. The match will be played at Windsor Park on a free date after next week's World Cup qualifier between Northern Ireland and Germany. The saddest thing about the whole fiasco is that it was Harry McConkey - Larne's player-coach - who was not registered to play in Saturday's win over Cookstown. McConkey, 38 next month, was desperate to play last night because he thought it would be his last match at the international stadium. Indeed, he was stripped off and ready for action when he was told he could not turn out - because Larne would face another ?1000 fine on top of the 1000stg penalty they already face. "I could not believe it and was absolutely gutted when I was told about it. I was thinking this was my last chance to play on the hallowed turf and to be informed I couldn't was earth shattering," said McConkey today.

Incidently Linfield won the replayed Cookstown game by 3 goals to nil.

Councillor Concerned over Football Club Comments - 17 July 97

Larne FC chairman Sam McCready has been taken to task by a local councillor for comments he made last week. And a council committee is to be set up to meet with the cash-strapped club. The move was taken after Cllr. Bobby McKee voiced concern about the claim that Inver Park could be sold off to housing or supermarket developers. Mr McKee pointed out that Inver Park is owned by the council. He said he was particularly concerned from the point of view of tenants of property in the area. He also said that in view of Mr McCready's comments he was delighted that the council had not agreed to hand over Inver Park to the club. Cllr. Robert Lindsay Mason added that if something were not done soon Larne would not have a soccer club.

Welcome Windfall for cash-strapped Larne - 17 July

As Larne FC begin the long, arduous task of literally trying to redress the balance of their considerably lop-sided bank account, there's news of a major boost for their financial fortunes - via a new club sponsor!

They are currently in deep discussions with a local benefactor who is on the verge of agreeing a deal to back the club from now into the new millenium.

The club were previously backed by Britannia Assurance but that lucrative three year deal expired at the end of season and the club was obviously badly in need of a replacement for that first-time sponsor, which had been worth in excess of ?20,000.

Details of the new package are expected to be announced by the end of the month at a press conference. The deal is understood to involve a substantial injection of cash, covering jersey sponsorship plus ground adveryising and corporate hospitality.

There's more good news on the cash front as well because the Larne '97 fund is beginning to gather momentum too.

At Tuesday night's board meeting, plans were laid for a strategy to maximise the potential of the blueprint for ridding themselves of the overdraft that is such a millstone around their neck.

They have pinpointed Tuesday, 5 August as the date of their next meeting with those who have signed up to support the campaign which involves the pledging of a monthly donation for the next three years to the club's special account.

Between now and then committee members will be actively engaged in canvassing more support from members of the community.

Sam's the Man

Sam McCready was elected chairman of Larne Football Club on Tuesday night and has immediately inherited a massive debt, the club is in the red by an amount well in excess of £100,000.

McCready's three-year appointment was one of the three major changes at the top table in Inver Park, but it's basically little more than a bout of musical chairs.

Johneen Black moves from chairman to chief executive, comfortably defeating Ian Duffin for that post on a show of hands, while Ken Pritchard switches from chief executive to president, a virtually unanimous choice - again on a show of hands with Duffin the defeated candidate.

Norman Neill's election to the committee was the only other development, this no surprise since he was co-opted six months ago and that required little more than formal ratification.

McCready admits he has a tough job ahead. But he believes it's all about rallying support from the people of Larne to support their local football club.

"There's no hiding the fact that we have serious financial problems. But we are not alone, in that most football clubs are in the same situation. Everybody in that room, an attendance in excess of fifty, expressed determination to do their best to resurrect the club. The new manager, Kel McDermott, also spoke very positively about the future" stated McCready.
