Point Loma Lighthouse

lighthouse

High atop a hill on Point Loma overlooking the
San  Diego bay sits a  lighthouse.  It  contains a

museum which  provides historical  information.

Offering one of the best vistas of the bay, the grounds provide a home
to a variety of plants and animals. Self-guided tours and a card & gift
store provide interesting things to look at and take home as sourvenirs.

stairs

Climb the spiral staircase to view a fresnel lens. It is
used to send out a beacon of light visible at night to
sailors navigating the San Diego harbors.  Although
the lighthouse is open, it's not in operation. There's
a second lighthouse located on the grounds which is.

UPDATE:  A February 1999 news item stated lighthouses
will no  longer be needed as sea-faring ships have switched
to the Global Positioning Service (GPS satellites).
