Summer 2000

This summer was really special to me because I made many personal firsts: first time of missing a plane; first time of doing summer job; first time of travelling to the South Hemisphere; first time of adjusting to the Daylight Saving (moving the clock an hour ahead) twice in a year; and first time of taking planes for more than 30 hours in a week.

The first 2 months of the holiday was dump as I was seeking for job. No job, no cash... So, I could not do much except sitting at home and watching TV.

I attended to fours job interiews in total. The first one was Cathay Pacific Cabin Crew Recruitment Day. It was a walk-in interview that looked for contract flight attendants. I went to this recruitment day only because of curiosity and I did not have an intention to work on a contract of 3 years. After the interview, they asked me for second interview on the following day. But I did not go as I would go to Singapore that afternoon. Also, I did not want to leave them a bad impression as I was not going to work for them anyway. Then, I went home and started packing things. But, I did it too slowly and went to the airport late. I missed the flight! I could only go on the next day.

The second interview was held by Education Department. The position I was applying for was "summer student" in the Mortgage Interest Subsidy Scheme. This job was more interesting to me because the content was more close to my major. However, I only received a "waiting list" notification after interview. I thought I should not be too optimistic on this position. Therefore, I applied two sales positions. I did not work for the first sales job as they required me to do road show under the fierce heat of 32c everyday. The second sales job was my last chance. This job was not road show sales. Instead, the company would make appointments with the clients. All I did was to go to the clients' offices and did a demonstration. Our company was a website. So, I was responsible to answer clients' questions on web. Of course, I would also promote the distinguish features of the web and ask them to subscribe. The job was challenging. I needed to travel around Hong Kong everyday. I had been working for abour a week until Education Department called me one day. They needed some extra students and asked my availability. I quitted the sales and worked for the ED for about 2 months. The government job was a good experience. I truly understood what kind of efficiency the government had (especially the time they need to pay a contract staff)

Meanwhile, some of my firends from overseas visited Hong Kong. I tried my best to be a good host to show them around the territory. The first one was Tyler. He made a stopover on his way to Shenzhen. The other one was Keisho. He was having a holiday after graduation. So, he spared about 2 weeks in Hong Kong to visit his father.

Then, I used my first time earned money to visit Australia.

Why Australia? The answer was simple: Olympics. I went to Sydney 2 weeks before opening of the games. The trip was fun. Here is the dairy of my trip.
