Sydney Harbour Bridge
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Sydney Harbour Bridge, a.k.a., the 'Coathanger', is also another well-known iconic structure of Australia.
Entering Sydney Harbour [also fondly known as Port Jackson] with the fantastic view of Sydney Harbour Bridge would almost be tantamount of viewing the Statue of Liberty at New York Harbor!
The Bridge was built in stages in 9 years. Steel materials were brought in mainly from England and some local sources [ratio of about 79:21] to the site called Milsons Point for assembly. The current site now stands a funfair arena called Luna Park which is a favourite haunt of many Australian families.
As a result of the construction, many families were displaced without compensation. Besides that, 'The Rocks' was also substantially changed to make way for both the Bridge and the Cahill Expressway.
In 1932, the Bridge was finally completed at a cost of about A$6.2 million.
The construction cost was eventually recovered fully by 1988 from the toll fees collected.
Sydney Harbour Bridge currently has 8 traffic lanes, 2 rail lines, 1 cycleway and a footpath.
During the peak hours, certain motor lanes would be reversed to ease the traffic flow going from the suburbs to the city, and vice versa.
Besides that, the Bridge suspends at about 1,650 feet to allow ships to sail below it without obstruction.
