V’sec sighed adjusting his straps for the tenth time in less minutes. Will you ever calm, rider mine? We’re only learning to go between today. V’sec nodded and tried to put his mind on something else. He looked about his fellow weyrlings and looked at the sun. Where’s A’lius? He’s going to be late for the lesson and D’tol will be mad when he arrives. He comes on Ilioneth. V’sec turned in his seat and looked to the skies finding a large antique bronze gliding down. He smiled and waved at both dragon and rider. In his time as a dragonrider, he’d become quick friends with A’lius being there was only a turns difference between the two of them in age. Ilioneth landed next to them and it was at that moment that D’tol decided that he should start the lesson. “Today we’ll be learning the art of betweening,” D’tol announced, “We’re going to Ganatek Hold. I’m sure that all of you have been there, at least once in your life. But, I don’t think that many of you have had the opportunity to see it from an aerial viewpoint. Therefore, Easoth is giving your dragon the appropriate image. Focus upon that. Your dragons will know what to do. It is instinctive.” V’sec smiled as the signal was given to take to the air. Metreth launched beautifully into the air not at all making it hard for the dragons about him to do like-wise. Easoth is giving me the image. My that’s a nice place… but he might have wanted to put a green or gold in the image, would have made it much more interesting. the blue told his rider smugly as he transferred the image into V’sec’s head. Metreth, if he did that it might cause us to time it instead of just betweening it to Ganatek. the bluerider scolded his dragon. Metreth shrugged mentally We go! he said as V’sec saw A’lius and bronze Ilioneth disappear between in front of them only for them to follow. The shocking cold of between took V’sec’s breath away. He knew his Wecos was still on his shoulder with her tail about his neck and that Metreth was under him yet he could feel neither dragonic beast. You two alright? he asked mentally though it was more to comfort himself. We are fine, rider mine… Hmm, I made a rhyme! the dragon chuckled. V’sec shook his head concentrating hard on the picture he’d been given. Moments later they appeared from between into the warm sun above Ganatek Hold. There is a problem! Metreth quickly announced to his rider upon reappearing in the air. On his shoulder Wecos seemed more alert and was chirping worriedly. A’lius and Ilioneth aren’t here! Can you hear them? The blue paused for a moment and by the time they landed he’d turned a shade of gray. There is nothing Metreth bellowed in a rage at not being able to find his larger brother. V’sec looked up at the sky hopefully. Only when the mournful cries of the other weyrling dragons of his class joined with his Metreth did the 20 turn old young man feel the tears that were streaking across his face as he felt the whole of the weyrlings’, both his dragon’s and every other dragon’s, pain. His best friend was gone. “A’lius,” he mumbled and looked up at the sky once more. Within a few moments a number of older more experienced dragons appeared from between to assist in calming the weyrlings though even they felt the pain of the loss of the bronze pair. V’sec hunched over the neck ridge in front of him. The only indication of his silent crying was the shutter of his shoulders. He didn’t even notice when the dragons grew silent only the Metreth finally spoke to him again, sadness coloring his words, Easoth says we will fly back straight to Talor Cliff Weyr… to keep from accidently losing another. Grief can cloud the process. Then let’s go, the rider replied feeling anger with his grieving process.
Later that night, V’sec watched as the trunk with A’lius’ belongings were carried out by two riders. Metreth watched as well, his large wings sagging and his color still looking more grey than midnight blue. We between again tomorrow, the blue informed his rider. “The classes will be different tomorrow,” V’sec replied in turn, “They will either be distracted by the sudden death or determined to keep focus.” The blue nodded raising his head high and properly folded his wings to his back in his resolve. We will be those who are focused! I’ll be scorched if we let anybody go between again on our watch. The blue dragon’s head whipped around to look at his rider You seem to have a plan for our future Perhaps I have.
