Smooth's Tribute To Greek Life

Black Greek Letter Organizations

The Nine (9) Pan-Hellenic black greek letter organizations of present day date back to the turn of the century. After the Reconstruction Era in America, several African- Americans saw fit to found several Fraternities and Sororities for the purpose of social advancement and networking of African-Americans, primarily.
At a time of rapant discrimination and oppression, these shone out as "inclusionary" tools to help promote brother and sisterhood as well as to provide service to society at large. Though each organization possesses distinctive names, characteristics and traditions, each provide essentially the same benefits to its esteemed members within and undying service throughout the community.
Across the nation and on a global scale (many international chapters through foreign nations) these nine (9) Pan-Hellenic organizations continue to strive for the advancement of blacks everywhere. The newest addition to these great black institutions is Iota Phi Theta, in November 1996.
