The Kitchen

Turn Thirteen: The Kitchen

Adriena takes her candle back from Aan and checks how much is left. She then wraps it up and places it back into her pouch. Following the group to the next door she says, " I'll just wait over here until you are done. Call if you need me."

Gregory says, "We have searched every room except the one door off of the main hall. Let's head to that door and see if it leads outside, or at least to a more interesting part of the residence." Gregory then draws his sword and dagger and heads to the last door, waiting in front of it while it is checked for traps.

Malis hefts her war-hammer a few times to loosen her arms and follows Gregory to the door. Ganthanor follows as well. Aanparon follows as well saying, "Yeah, let's check out the other door, this was a waste of time and effort."

Once the group reaches the door Gregory says, "Hey Aan, why don't you check the door for traps. If there are not traps I will open it." Gregory then sheathes his dagger to open the door.

Adriena then returns to the iron rings and begins examining them again, trying to fathom where they came from or what they could be used for, but doesn't learn anything new about them.

Aanparon is about to respond when a voice is heard from behind the party, "I already checked it, it is clean," everyone recognizes Garth's voice and with some grumbling Gregory opens the door.

Gregory pulls on the door handle and the door falls forward off the hinges. Gregory quickly moves to get out of the way, as does the rest of the party. The door narrowly misses landing on Gregory's foot and connects with the ground emitting a loud, "Thunk!" Looking into the room the party sees:

This looks like it used to be the kitchen, the room is 40'x50' and there are still marks near the fireplace (along the south wall) of where a stove once rested. You surmise that the looters must have been very strong to cart the stove out. On the other side of the fireplace the bread oven is almost totally destroyed, there are several bricks that have been shattered as if the looters used it as a target. In the northeast corner of the room there is another body, dressed in the same colors as the half-eaten human that was found in the "nest", laying face down. In the northwest corner there is another trap door to the ceiling with the ladder completely torn off. Next to the human body on the east wall there is a door as well as directly to the south of the door is a shuttered window. Directly across the room from the shuttered window, on the west wall there is another shuttered window.

Meanwhile, outside in the main hallway Adriena experiments with the rings by saying what she thinks might be command words for various magic item uses: "expand...hold...rise...capture...shrink...levitate...imprison...carry..." are just a few of the phrases that she tries, nothing seems to happen.

Aanparon says, "I'm willing to try to climb up there if you want. Give me the candle and a lift and I'll go up again. Better than standing around doing nothing."

Gregory moves forward to the body examining it. Not being able to detect any wounds he attempts to turn the body over using his foot. The task is tiresome due to the stiffness of the body and the lack of leverage but Gregory is able to do so. Holding his sword in his hand and pausing momentarily, with the expectation that the body will rise up and attack, Gregory is slightly disappointed to learn that the body is just that..a dead body. Gregory begins to bend down to get a closer look when something pulls at his arm, stopping him and a voice is heard, "There is something weird about the body, I think it has been trapped somehow," As Garth's voice fades from the room, Gregory stands back up and examines the body from a comfortable distance. It appears as if the throat of the human had been cut and there are some discolorizations, brownish in color, on the torso of the body. As Gregory watches, one of the discolorizations moves before his eyes. There are no visible weapons on the body.

Meanwhile, Aanparon is trying to figure how to get to the trap door. With the ladder completely missing, even with standing on the shoulders or even heads of his companions, it would be impossible for him to reach the trap door. Aanparon looks at the trap door and tries to puzzle out a solution to no avail.

Garth, after checking out the body to see if it had any valuables and noticing the small creatures that were on the body, begins wandering around the kitchen, searching for anything worth a few copper. As he searches the brick oven he notices something that only one trained in his profession would see, that while some of the bricks are destroyed, there are a few that have a slight wear in their corners. Quietly moving one of the bricks, Garth finds a small bag in which he finds 15 gold pieces (human coinage). No one in the party saw the discovery.
