The Winged Society of Australian Midgard
The Winged Society
The Winged Society is a shadowy arm of the Gift Religion that dates back to before the landing of the Imperials. Its origin comes about by the Gift hierarchy realising that their lack of military hardware and general pacifistic nature will eventually result in their own demise. In order to combat this problem, the Gift Priesthood ordered an organisation to be formed with the purpose of collecting enough information to predict if they are likely to be attacked in the near future and then have the know-how to use the information to the best advantage of the Gift church. Thus the Winged Society was formed to act with the speed and precision of swift, the cunning of a crow, and the fight of an eagle.
Many of the original members of the Winged Society were reformed thieves and cutthroats, some of them were even past members of the Society of Arms. Its first task was to create a huge spy network that would span the entire continent of Midgard. To begin with, this was a success but with the Imperial invasion and the resulting upheaval of the life of the Midgard people, many of the network operatives were lost. The replacement of these spies is a top priority.
In recent times, the Winged Society has even set up its own base of operations in some of the cities of Midgard. They appear to be black market operations but instead offer many skills and, if the price is right, some information about a topic of your choice, so long as it is not against the interest of the Gift Religion.
The Framework of the Winged Society power structure has only three seniors, all of equal power. The first senior is in charge of the ecclesiastical part of the society and he is usually a high level Gift Priest. The second is in charge of the spy networks and it is his job to continually fund, and organise the spy networks and all subsidiary operations. The last senior is usually a member of the Gift Demolishers and it is his job to act on the information in order to protect the interest of the Gift Religion. However, the highest authority. like that of the Gift Religion, is the Assembly of Speakers.
