Cosmic Powers

An alternate purchasing scheme for GURPS Supers

This purchasing scheme is intended to allow GURPS Supers to handle the tremendous power levels that appear in mainstream comics without having to spend thousands or millions of points to do so. The basic concept behind Cosmic Power is that the more power you have, the less important a further increase in power becomes, as you will find fewer and fewer situations where your full power will be needed. To reflect this in game terms, you get a discount for purchasing large amounts of power (similar to buying in bulk at a supermarket...) The table below shows the discounts provided...

 Level

LC Multiplier

1-20

x 1

21-200

x 1/10

201-2000

x 1/100

2001-20,000

x 1/1000

20,001-200,000

x 1/10,000

And so on.

So, if purchasing 300 Levels of the Laser power (LC 8), the first twenty levels would cost 8 points each (total cost 160); the next 180 levels (21-200) would cost 0.8 points each (for an additional 144 points), and the final hundred levels would cost 0.08 points each (for another 8 points); total cost: 312 points.

This same purchasing scheme can also be used for Levelled Advantages; one could buy DR500 by paying normal price for the first twenty points of DR, one-tenth price for every additional DR up to 200, one-hundredth price for every additional DR up to 2000, and so on.

A variation of this purchasing scheme can be used to bring the price of numerous extra limbs in line:

Extra Arms

Price per Arm

1-2

x 1

3-5

x 1/2

6-10

x 1/5

11-20

x 1/10

21-50

x 1/20

So a creature with eight extra arms would pay full price for the first two (20 pts), half price for the next 3 (15 points), and one-fifth price for the final three (6 points). Total price: 41 points. (Compare to the current 80 points needed for the same result...)

Sometimes, a player will want to apply an Enhancement or Limitation to only a portion of the levels of a power; when doing this, apply to the most expensive levels first, then to the next-most-expensive, and so on down the line."
