After the excellent Bones I was eager to get my hands on Shep's latest offering, Eviloid.
The game itself is based on an old Commodore 64 classic called Sinistar. It involves a little spaceship flying around and collecting jewels by blowing up oncoming asteroids. These jewels are then converted into bombs which are the only things that can hurt the Eviloid.
This may sound like a simple premise but is stylishly executed in Shep's version. You are
against not only the clock but also alien attackers which become more numerous as the game progresses.
Clever programming, again like Bones, seems to be the order of the day in Eviloid. As you
move around the play area the screen fake-scrolls with you so you get a feeling of enormous depth when playing. Also, each level (normal and boss) are on the same frame so while each level is hugely different, the size of the game (kb) is much smaller than it would be if each level was on a separate screen.
The graphics in Eviloid are top-notch and suit the game well, although relatively small. The
Eviloid itself is superbly drawn!
Also the background music is incredibly atmospheric and suits the dark and moody style of
the game perfectly.
The game s extremely playable and easy to pick up. It is great fun to play too, but if you
collide with an asteroid you are thrown back for miles, which can get a bit annoying! However, this is also true of Sinistar so is a faithful conversion.
All in all Eviloid is a great game and an excellent conversion of an old classic. In fact, I feel
that this game is better than the original! Shep has himself another winner!
