Staats Bio

Dr. Staats has been active in the game design community since the late 1970s. Mark Rogers and Rich published Khymir in 2006.

Dr. Staats is open to doing presentations or running seminars at conventions or meetings. The best approach is just to provide him with the details and see if schedules permit.

In his civilian capacity, Dr. Staats serves as the Department Head of the Operations Research Department for the MITRE Corporation where he advises senior executives in the Federal government. Awards and distinctions include letters of commendation from the Assistant Secretary of Defense, a Superior Honor Award from the US State Department, and the President's award for outstanding research.

He has written numerous articles and four books on topics ranging from game design and artificial intelligence to the value of information. Dr. Staats is an internationally recognized speaker on organizational change and information theory. He was recognized by the European Engineering Society in 1996 as one of the 100 most cited information engineers world-wide.

Colonel Staats, US Army Reserves, was commissioned through the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College where he was the top graduate (Pershing Award winner). Colonel Staats received his Ph.D. in Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he studied under the auspices of a Hertz Fellowship.

Colonel Staats is currently the commander for the 211th RSG, Tikrit, Iraq. Past significant assignments included: director for Iraqi Security Forces support, Multi-National Corps-Iraq; command of the 9th Headquarters Camp Post Station, Baghdad, Iraq; command of the 226th Supply and Service Company, VII Corps, Germany; command of the Alpha (Supply and Service) Company, 2nd Supply and Transport Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Korea; support operations officer for the 201st Forward Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division; planning officer for the 200th Theater Army Materiel Management Center, Germany; division chief for the 55th Materiel Management Center; and as a logistics officer for the Department of the Army, Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics.

His military awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and numerous others including the Polish Award of Distinction.

He is the father of Kathy, Liz, and Rich Staats. Kathy is currently attending medical school, and Rich has enlisted in the US Marines. Liz is currently attending college for hospitality management.
