Date:4/1/98 Opponent:Chaos Result:Astounding Victory of course!!!
Deployment...There was a small forest in the centre of the board with a village on the left hand side and another larger forest on the right. At my end I had a two tier hill in the centre of the battle line with my flank anchored by another small village. At his end of the table he had a solitary hill. I postioned my large unit of Skeletons to the left of the centre forest and my Chariots, Wraiths, and Mounted wights to the right hand side of the forest. My Skull Chuckers were on the hill and a Carrion and a unit of Mummies held my left flank. He deployed his unit of Chaos Warriors opposite my Skeletons and a unit of Dragon Ogres and Plague Bearers in front of my Chariots and Mounted Wights. His Bloodthirster (we were fighting with the old pre Realm of Chaos rules) was placed on my left flank....
Turn One....I won the dice roll and immediatly advanced with my Skeletons, Mummies, Wraiths and flew my Carrion up high. I moved the cavalry toward the Dragon Ogres and the Chariots toward the clump of trees in the centre of the board. I used the Staff of Damnation to move again to put me in charge range... He dutifully moved all his units right were I wanted them....very kind. Predictibly, the Chaos Warriors headed straight for my Skeletons as did the Bloodthirster, the remainder heading for my right flank and the cavalry.
During the shooting phase I inflicted a monstrous 6 casualties on his Warrior regiment with one of my Skullchuckers....and the other killed a Dragon Ogre routing the unit
By the h-t-h phase his army was looking very ragged, he was already down to 9 Chaos Warriors when my two Chariots hit causing another 5 casualties and routing the unit, finally destroying them in the pursuit. The most interesting battle was against the Bloodthirster. I must admit that with everything going my way, I was getting a little bit cocky, and was probably pushing my luck but what the hell! But it paid off, as my Vampire Lord with a Potion of Strength and his Hydra Sword promptly mauled the Bloodthirster and removed six wounds and only took two in return thanks to the Black Amulet. Sadly, it passed its leadership test. My Mounted Wights easily despatched the Plaguebearers with their charge.
The Magic phase was very amusing, as I had the Forbidden Rod. I cast Gaze of Nagash at his Bloodthirster, which took four wounds and was finally finished off. BYE BYE BLOODTHIRSTER!!! I then used my Winds of Magic cards to power up the Wind of Death straight into the now rallied Dragon Ogres killing one and routing them for a second time..this was turning into a slaughter!
Game to me I think..... I am the first to admit I was very, very lucky. Afterall, it isn't every day that Chaos Warriors run and a Bloodthirster gets his ass kicked by a Vampire all in the first turn!!....a return match has been arranged for a couple of weeks time. In that he will ally with a Skaven player and I will ally with another Undead player...should be interesting..I wonder if he has learnt his lesson about the potentcy of Necromantic Magic???Date:21/1/98 Opponent: Empire Result: Narrow Victory....
The deployment was as follows, Town on my right, woods in the middle, hill on the left. I can't remeber what he did with his terrain but as he had lots of cavalry it was incidental as he obviously wanted the quickest route into combat....
I placed my Mounted Wights and new Mounted Vampire Lord on the left flank in front of the hill. My Skullchuckers were put on top of the hill. In the middle were my Mummies, Skeletons (which were accompanied by a Vampire Count) and Chariots along with a unit of Wraiths (which performed miracles....)
He placed his Reiksguard in the centre going for my skellis. To the right was the White Wolves, the left of the Reiksguard, the Knight Panther. Also in the centre was a unit of Repeating hand gunners.... A unit of Halberdiers anchored the flank and a Wizard was in his army as well. On his left flank he put a Steam tank and a Volley Gun (opposite my General!!)
He took the first turn and moved all his units bar the Steam Tank. In the shooting phase he then proceeded to bounce cannonballs through my lovely Mounted Wights, killing two, the Volley Gun also destroyed a Skullchucker ( I was beginning to hate this guy...) He also shot up a Mummy with his Handgunners..
More nasty surprises came in the Magic phase during which he cast Banishment, of course he had to use another races' spell deck, slightly cheating in my book. It says I can't win with my own race so I will use someone elses....I feel the same about allies, what is the point of collecting one race that supposedly has strengths and weaknesses, only to negate them by taking allies? ie a Dwarf player (I also have a Dwarf army) taking Wizards..it defeats the point of Warhammer, that is to see who is the best general..anyway enough of my opinions back to the battle. He cast it with Total Power and subsequaently melted half my army away...I had left most of the Wights, A few skellies under a Wight, two chariots and three Wraiths along with seven Mummies. He had also killed my Vampire Count, which I ain't sure is allowed, as Vampires are not Undead how come they are affected by Banishment?? Bit dodgy that...Now I was pissed off!! I had been dealt Drain Magic which was stored for later use..it was to prove vital...
In my turn I moved into range to charge using Vanhel's, my Staff of Damnation having perished with my Vampire Count. I shot at those nasty Kin-ig-its (watch Monty Python) and completely missed. My Chariots had charged both the Knights Panther and the White Wolves, one chariot killed a Knight Panther but lost the combat and crumbled to dust, the other failed to kill any White Wolves but the Skellie steeds pounded two of the elite Knights to death!!!! I won but they didn't break.... The handgunners also fled in fear from the skellies, and kept on going for the next turn as well fleeing from the game, but not before they had shot up a Mummy...In the magic phase I cast Curse of Years with Total Power, using the Forbidden Rod, on the Volley Gun crew, I had become paranoid about that gun which was actually pretty ineffective in this battle..lucky eh? However, only one crewman died, curses!! I cast Vanhel's onto the Skellies and Wraiths to charge them into combat against his Reiksguard and General. The Skellies into the front the Wraiths into the side. To my utter amazement, they fled in terror from three Wraiths!!! I love those guys, I really do...I caught them up and slaughtered the lot..hurrah!! That will teach you to take Banishment humie!!!
His next turn, he moved his Halberdiers forward, and the Wizard too...He then proceeded to kill ALL my Mounted Wights (which has NEVER happened before) using the Steam Tank Cannon. The Volley Gun fired ALL remaining barrels at my General, who minus his bodyguard was now very exposed. However, his Black Amulet just saved him with one wound remaining....
In combat his Knight Panther charged my Mummies. The White Wolves finished off the chariot.... He then made a BIG mistake, he later confessed to have had Total Power again!!! And with Banishment and ALL of my units now in range you could guess the results...However, he didn't use it first!!The fool, he tried to cast Conruscation of Finreir, cackling manically I threw down Drain Magic and let out a hugh sigh of relief.....the turning point had come..I now charged my Vampire at his Wizard, there was no way he was going to live...the Hydra sword made sure of that and I would no longer have to worry about him reviving his General, dropping a hill on me or banishing my entire army......I hate High Magic...
The remainder of my Army and the Skellies and Wraiths all piled into the Knights...after a further two turns of h-t-h which were a real meat grinder and my Vampire being killed and returning due to the Carstein ring, the battle was over....
A tot up of VP's revealed a "draw", I recounted and had actually won by 2 due to killing his general and capturing a standard....What a game...perhaps next time Mr.Empire...De Scales rdies on taking all with him..
