Technical Help for

Red Alert

Last Updated 4/30/97

Keep in mind that I'm no Tech Help guy or anything. I'm making this because I'm tired of people asking me these questions. DO NOT send me mail on technical problems. I won't answer it for the reason is that I probably won't know the answer. This page is to answer a few of the (many) problems with Red Alert.

For your viewing pleasure: Yellow = Dummy     Green = Dummy who somehow stumbled over the answer.

I'm in Kali and I start Red Alert. I go to Multiplayer, then Network. I'm in the lobby now, but no one is there! What's wrong?

Several things. First you could be on a server with no Red Alert players on it (Doh!). Second, there may be Red Alert players there but they are all playing and the lobby is empty. The Third, (and most common mistake) is how you start the game. Many players came to Red Alert off of Warcraft 2 (I did) and they are used to going to a server on Kali, then starting Warcraft 2 through a folder or through an icon on your desktop. To properly start Red Alert, you MUST start it in Kali. This means you should click on the 'Red Alert' Icon at the bottom of the Kali screen. If you don't have the icon and you do have the game installed go to options and 'search for games' in Kali.

I start Red Alert and the intro and the menu loads fine. As soon as a click on any of the menu options I get a black screen. I press a button and the 'black screened Red Alert' closes and I go back into Win95. What's wrong!?

You have a video card problem.

No I don't! I have a Matrox Millenium with a [billion] megabytes of Video Ram! Its not my video card! What else is wrong!?

I have a Matrox Millenium Video Card too and I have had the 'black screen' problem numerous times. The problem is with Matrox's and Microsoft's Direct 3d's drivers being incompatible. To solve the problem, delete Red Alert. Then, download the newest versions of drivers for your video card. Follow the instructions on your video card drivers. Now reinstall Red Alert. When it asks to install Direct X say 'Yes'. At the end it will ask you to override the video card's drivers, say 'No'. Now sit there stupidly as the rest of Red Alert installs. That should solve the black screen problem.

I can't get Red Alert to run over Kali! What do I do?

Get the latest version of Kali. Follow the instructions. Some people try to get Red Alert to run over kali 0.9. Haha! Get version 1.1 and it should work.

My games are running slow on Kali. What's wrong?

Someone has a bad ping and is slowing the game down for everyone. If its not youself then you should drop the person when you get a chance. Also, the server you are on might be really crowded. You might want to try playing on another server.

I'm getting a lot of 'out of sync' problems and whenever we start RA games on Kali it becomes a big mess. In the lobby people appear and disappear even though those people say they've been there the entire time. What's wrong?

Many RA players 'drift' through servors. They connect to another server, alt tab to get to the lobby, see whose there, then leave again. The problem with alt tabbing is that your connection to the server will get messed. Just reconnect to the server or restart kali.

Wah! I still get out of sync errors!

Someone must have a rules.ini file in their RA direcotry. Either that or someone has played the hjk beta and hasn't restarted RA yet.

I get the black screen problem when I try to run RA. I know its not my video card, what's wrong!?

Check the free hardrive space you have on your C drive. You should have at least 40 to 50 meagbytes free for RA to work well.
