The Armed Forces of the United States of America are: the Army, the Aerospace Force, the Navy, the Space Force ( which uses naval rank and organization), and Marines.
The Army is concerned with the defense of the United States of America, both from ground attack ( principally from Mexico) and supporting the Aerospace Force in defending against air/missile attack. It maintains ground based sensors to detect attack ( of course the USAF satellite net is the first line of warning, but satellites can be blinded).
The army has short range ground based ABM missiles, beam weapons, and mobile ground based ASAT weapons. Point defense SAMs and Lasers are emplaced at most military bases and around the major cities, although many of these are manned primarily by reservists.
Army ground forces ( except special forces and rangers) are not normally used except in direct defense of American soil, or in a major war. It has become traditional that the Marines are America's expeditionary force ( the army's rangers can be used with them, and special forces are often used by the intelligence community) and the army is only employed when the conflict is considered major, requiring a "war" effort ( declared or not).
The Army has Heavy and Light Divisions, plus two "airborne" divisions and supporting arms. Heavy divisions have hovertanks, hover APCs, and heavy tracked tanks. Light divisions have warbirds, Lt.H.APCs, some hovertanks, etc. There are only two Light Divisions currently active ( other than the "airborne" divisions), they are optimized for combat in extremely rough or close terrain. There are also a few independent light brigades, which can be attached to heavy divisions fighting in rough or close terrain, or in urban areas.
Once a missile attack is detected there are "killer satellites" and ground based ABM missiles and beam weapons. Ground based ASAT weapons and air launched ASAT missiles are also available. To stop air attacks interceptors and air launched missiles from the AWACS are depended on. Point defense SAMs and Lasers are emplaced at most USAF bases, although many of these are manned primarily by reservists. Point defense SAMs and Lasers around cities and army bases are US Army, around navy and space force bases are USMC.
USAF also has ground support aircraft. These are generally vertols, they use hovering "pop-up" attack techniques, since aircraft tend to die quickly within direct line of sight of DEW ground defenses. Fixed wing ( non-vertol) aircraft use standoff weapons to attack ground targets, usually from over the horizon.
Modern USAF orbital fighters have Jerome drive ( stutterwarp) capability.
All such craft have a J in front of their designation, aircraft, fighter
spacecraft, etc have a V as their second number. The most widely
used USAF space/orbit fighter is currently the JVF-22B.
