The Early Life of Geostria
(as penned by Behmon'd the Scribe)
Ahhh...the unchecked power of youth...such anger, such rebellion...such a capacity for wondrous things...
I stray, my apologize dear reader.... Herein I will give you a small background on Geostria; mayhap you know her elven born name?
Born she was to a minor noble family of the Silvanesti elves. Her birth name Nueinna, bringer of joy in the common tongue, was not plucked out of the stars. No, to her parents she was joy and last hope. You see, our story actually starts before Geostria's birth for what she became is founded on how she was raised; and how she was raised is based on an event 50 years before her birth.
I doubt I need to go into much depth on the elfish ways of propagation. Suffice it to say a birth in the land of elves is a rare thing. Natures way of implementing a balance for the elfish longevity and slight superiority to we humans which reproduce quicker, have fewer birth fatalities, and shorter gestation cycles. Back to the story however....
Fifty years before the birth of Geostria, her mother was pregnant with a child. The gestation was a difficult one as Geostria's mother was a slip of a woman and not very well constructed to bear such a burden. Throughout her pregnancy, a mage of the white robes assisted every way he could. Though traditionally this function would be handled by a cleric, there were none that the family would trust. Thus it came to pass all of the families hopes and dreams became the burden of the poor white robe. He did all that was within his power but the child was miscarried half way through term. Now, if you understand the times involved in elfish reproduction and their love of life, you may understand how their feelings turned towards our poor white robe. Unfortunately, he was practically murdered within the family’s home before the Silvanesti guards intruded whisking him away to safety.... Ahhh, now there is a story to tell. Another time mayhap...
Thus, with Geostria's birth, she became the families center. She was to be coddled, spoiled, flaunted.... However, most importantly, isolated from everything outside the circle of her family. Dear reader, if you've had a child or been close to a child, I am sure you know what this sort of upbringing leads to. Elven teenagers are no different from human aside from the fact that they remain teenagers far longer....
It was on her 45th Day of Life that she began to realize her imprisonment by her parents. The family had gone on a carriage ride to Silvanost to celebrate her Day of Life. As they rode through the countryside, Geostria would occasionally see other children playing together. This made her curious as her family had always told her that children did not play with one another.
That evening as they arrived back home she questioned her parents of this. Their reply was that Geostria was special and that’s why she did not play with other children. She didn’t understand but the matter was dropped.
On her 70th Day of Life Geostria realized what her calling in life was. She knew she must follow the ways of the mage. Now Geostria did not know the story of our poor white robe and thus didn’t think her parents would have any objection to wish. So she went to her parents with her realization. When they heard, their objections were strong and they forbid her to consider this notion. The argument was long and heated. In the end, Geostria ran to her room in tears. It was at this point that her parents told her the story of her mother’s previous pregnancy. Geostria could immediately see that they were in error in believing this was the poor mages fault. At that point she decided her course of action.
The arguments lasted for 10 years off and on. The whole time Geostria would sneak out when she could and learn simple spells from those mages that lived in the area. They were often amazed by how quickly she learned. She seemed to be a natural. She was becoming quite proficient by the time her 80th Day of Life neared. She knew that soon she must travel to the High Tower to take her test but she didn’t know how she could leave without her parents consent. She decided to think about it, as there was no great rush.
It was on her 80th Day of Life that her parents discovered what she had been doing. They rushed to her room demanding that she give up her wild notion. She told them that she would not that she was born to do this. She also told them that the time was getting near for her to take her test. They once more forbid her and locked her in her room never to allow her to leave. This upset Geostria, but she knew what she must do. She gathered up her things and snuck out of the house, never to return.
She chose a common tongue name meaning Nature's Star as she thought she could right all the wrongs of the world and set the entirety thereof in harmony with her elfish roots. To accomplish this goal she picked what she felt was the easiest route as well as the ultimate in rebellion.... Thus, she quested to Sarkin to become a mage of the white robes and to take her test. There were a few stories to be told along that route which helped to mature her a bit, but her mind was set...she was a Silvanesti...she was Elf...she was a Female...this combination allows no change once the path is chosen....
