Space Marine Avenger Background Information
Humans often display various forms and degrees of genetic mutation. Some of
these mutations take the form of physical deformity or dangerous abilities.
Many of these mutants are tolerated to a degree in the Imperium, but many
more are exiled or terminated by the Inquisition.
Some mutations however, serve to better the species by granting individuals
with useful Psychic powers and enhanced abilities, both of which are harnessed
by the various Adeptus. Some of these abilities can be augmented by training
or by bio-mechanical implants. The most well known of these useful mutations
is the one that grants individuals the ability to manipulate the powers of the
Warp and generate controlled Psychic powers and abilities.
There is another mutation however, that is little known except to the Adeptus
Astartes, or Space Marine Chapters. It allows certain humans to manipulate a
different kind of power that has no name. The mutation usually only appears
in Space Marines, and only a few of them. There are a few cases of other
Imperial military personnell being gifted in this way, but the cases are very
rare. Those Marines affected by the mutation are sent to the main headquarters
of the Ordo Avengerius on the death-world of Talus III. There they are trained
to use their special gifts, which are assumed to come directly from the
Emperor in his infinite wisdom.
The training consists of four years of study and practice at the main training
complex, culminated by a war game simulation that requires them to use their
special abilities to survive in the harsh conditions of Talus III, while at
the same time engaging in mock battles, unarmed and unprovisioned, against
their fellow trainees. The Apprentices now return to their Chapter to continue
to hone their skills under the tutelage of the Chapter's own Avenger Masters.
Those that successfully complete the training go on to become Space Marine
Avenger Knights. A few who exhibit greater potential will be trained further
to become Masters and will be given charge over their own trainees.
