Metal Gear

About a decade before the "stelath" genre became big with games like Denchu: Stelath Assasins, Metal Gear Solid, and Goldeneye the original Metal Gear had already done this successfully. Making a game that involved avoiding enemies rather than fighting them was an extremely novel idea at the time.

In Metal Gear you play as Solid Snake a secret agent sent out to infiltrate the country of Outer Haven and rescue the missing agent Grey Fox. Of course you start out with nothing but some cancer sticks (How'd Ultra sneak that by Nintendo?) and his communicator. Since you start with nothing and must find all equipment, you must fight off enemies with your bare fists. Now this is the cool "stealth" part of the game comes in, you have to sneak up behind enemies and beat them to death, or you can wait for some of the enemies to fall asleep (I FEEL ASLEEP!) then kill them. And thanks to your trusty transceiver you can contact your friends back at base for badly translated infromation.

There are several types of items in this game like gas masks, mine detectors, enemy disguises, all that good stuff. Of course there's all sorts of cool weapons too, pistol, rocket launcher, remoter control missle launcher, machine gun....

Metal Gear is without a doubt a true classic, sadly though, the true sequel was never released here. Instead we got the crappy "Snake's Revenge" sigh....

Graphics Music Sound Control Overall
OK so they don't look that good, it doesn't hurt the game at all though. I give it a 6 Cool, "sneaky" music that fits the game really well. I give it an 8.5 Not really that interesting but it sounds OK. I give it a 7 It's pretty good, but being able to move diagonally would have been nice. I give it an 8 A classic that was really original back in the day (and still is). I give it a 9
