Every time I sit down and play this game, I can vividly picture me and Nic and Ian and Mikea, sliding the sumo's, getting run over by the swimmers, and trying to beat that impossible Rex.
The gameplay in this game is unique. It is it's own style, very difficult at first, yet strangely addictive the more you play. To push the guys into the walls, you have to "flip" the panesl on the floor and push the enemies backwards. This get tricky because it is sometimes hard to hit the guys that jump (evil Rex) and if the dude is on the same square as you, you have to move backwards and then face forward to hit them. You get the hang of it after a while. When fighting the bosses, you will often get turned into an enemy, which is fun. If you can't kill the guy when you are the enemy, it will fade off after a while. When you die, the level starts over with the amount of guys that were alive when you died.
You are a dude, and you are on a quest to beat this wizard who stole your girlfriend. The level selection is Mega Man based, and there are six 'stages' to beat. When you beat them all, you go to the castle in the middle of the screen. Here you fight all sorts of enemies from all of the levels, each one getting harder. When you beat the castle, and you think you have beaten the game, then you get whisked away to a castle in the sky (which I think is the Mendel Palace). In this place, you fight ninja guys who shove you into walls and each other.
The first 5 rounds (out of the ten) you fight the regular enemies, which are usually pretty easy. The next 5, you fight the harder version of the enemies, which are the same sprites, but just different colors.
The rounds are all stup the same way, exept that there are more or less enemies in different place, and there are different items on the ground. When you beat a round, you progress onto the next round, simple as that.
Most of the items you can get are weird and/or helpful. There are the manditory get-a-certain-amount-of-these-for-an-extra-man items, being represented as stars, and having to get 100 for a free life. There is an item that says "five sec" on it, and it gives you 2000 points. There is also a random box, that switches between a cherry (worth 10 points), a one up, some grapes (10,000 points), and a ten-star schindig. Then there are the weirder of the items...
There are suns and half cloudy suns, each one does something very different. The suns flip every panel, which is very helpful (unless you are in a level covered in warps), and the cloudy suns turn your whole world black and put a star on every panel. The suns also turn the 'cloudy sun world' back into the regular world.
One of the main things that makes this game is the interesting, various floor tiles. There are plenty of them, lots of which, are helpful. There is a tile that is orange and has a white spiral on it. That one flings you forward in the direction you stepped on it, killing everything in your path. There is also a panel that has little sound wave looking things on it that flips every panel on its horizontal and vertical axis. A variation of this one looks the same except the waves look lighter and a darkened wave circles around them. You flip the panels in the direction of the dark waves. There are bricks, which you cannot walk through. Sometimes you can flip through these, and sometimes you have to count on the enemies to break them (some can). If you catch a ride on an orange swirly, then you can break through the bricks. There is a zone tile, which summons an enemy and then closes up, and there is a metal tile, which renders a tile completely useless. When fighting Wendy, her drawings will turn tiles into 'metal' tiles (because they cannot be flipped or anything). The zone tiles summon up one of the beginning enemies, no matter what stage you are on, and the metal tiles, you can't flip.
The first enemies that should be beaten are the polka dot dudes. They are easy, and good for warming up. After you beat their incredibly easy rounds, then you face what seems to be your boss for the level, when he just skips away. After you beat these dudes, it is pretty much up to you (I do not reccomend trying Rex or Wendy until you get good, because they are hard!).
There are a variety of bosses, the easiest of which being your run-in with the wizard, which happens two times. Sometimes he'll turn you into one of the enemies, sometimes he'll just jump around like an idiot. Either way, he's really easy.
The other bosses can be easy, depending on which level. All there are are a bunch of fast moving advanced enemies in an empty room, that you have to kill. Wendy is by far the hardest, because she can create baddies with her magic paintbrush, and they take up flipping space. The ballerina boss, on the other hand, is easier than most levels.
Two player mode is great! One of the best features is that if you die in the middle of a round, then you don't have to reset everything. You can just keep playing. I guess the only downside to two player mode is that you have to share the stars that are given, but the pro's way outweigh the cons. The most fun feature though, is that you can bash your 'friend' into the enemies to kill them.
In conclusion, this is a great game, fun for those rainy days with a group of friends over, or at 2:00 in the morning, or just about any time. Thank you.
