The story to this game is pretty simple. Thugs have taken over River City High School and there are only two guys to stand in their way, Alex and Ryan who are obviously stronger than most people in the city. You battle your way through the city streets fighting different gangs, bosses and such. The enemies are all in gangs based on school steryotyeps. Like jocks, frat guys, exchange students. etc.
What makes the game so cool is that it's set up like an RPG, when you defeat enemies, they drop money, which you use to buy things like food, books, shoes,etc. that increase your stats.
Another interesting feature to this game is that the enemies and characters talk to you through a dialouge box at the bottom of the screen. Of course, this feature gets old fast thanks to repetitve comments by the enemies(BARF! comes to mind).
River City Ransom also has one of the worst endings of all time. After you play through the whole game, you are treated only to a few lines of text.
Keep in mind that this game is a blast. Especially with two players. This is one of those games that doesn't look good on paper, but play it, you'll see what I mean.
