What is Tenchi Muyo

    The Tenchi Muyo! anime series has become so popular there are "spin offs" from the
original OAVs (Original Animated Videos), which includes the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki!
OAVs series 1 & 2; The Pretty Sammy Special; The Mihoshi Special; the TV series Tenchi
Universe and Shin Tenchi; and 2 movies: Tenchi Muyo! in Love and Tenchi Muyo!
Manatsu no Eve! (Midsummer's Eve!). There is also a third movie in the making, possibly
titled, "Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2." Besides the anime releases, there are Tenchi Muyo!
novels, manga (Japanese comics), toys, and art books, and other merchandising.

    The series has a mixture of comedy, action, drama, and sci-fi, so this series pretty much
include all popular genres. Between the OAV series, the TV series, and movies, each has
its own plot and storyline in that it does not follow sequentially from each medium (OAV,
TV, and movies) which can be confusing at times. We Tenchi fans prefer to call each
individual series an "alternate Tenchi universe".

    The anime series takes place in present day Japan where Tenchi Masaki is your average
high school kid who stumbles upon a few "out-of-this-world" guests, which eventually,
becomes part of his family. While living with his grandfather and father, Yosho and
Nobuyoki, he first engages Ryoko, and I believe Ryoko is the catalyst to Tenchi's exciting
adventure, alleviating Tenchi's serene and boring life. With the appearance of Ryoko,
comes Ayeka/Aeka, Sasami, Ryo-Ohki, Mihoshi, Kiyone, Washuu, Tsunami, and other
abundant cast members.


    "Ten" means heaven and "chi" means earth. In a non-poetic sense, Tenchi means sky and ground with a direct translation from the Japanese calligraphy of Tenchi. "Muyo" means "no need". "Tenchi Muyo", when put together, means 'this side up'.

Tenchi Muyo In Love

      Our story begins at the Galaxy Police headquarters. Alarms and bells go off like mad as
AI Class criminal Kain escapes and trashes the headquarters! He goes speeding off toward Earth, buzzing Kiyone’s ship Yagame on his way. As Kain touches down Tenchi starts to blur and nearly dissapears!
     This is set to take off right after the TV series last episode, once everybody returns to
Earth. While Tenchi is watching a video of his mother, Achika, suddenly in a flash his mother

       dissappears, and he starts to also! The only thing stopping him and keeping him from oblivion is the Greatest Scientific Mind in the Universe. Washu anticipates it, and saves tenchi. “The Problem is in the Past”, and now everybody must go into the past to protect Achika from whatever it is that threatens her. Ryoko and Ayeka go to the school as
students, Tenchi and Sasami hang out in the woods and follow everybody, Mihoshi gets a
job as a teacher, and Kiyone gets a job as a janitor. The girls find a place to stay easy: they
tell the school it’s to far to walk so they can board at the old Masaki household.
     As the story starts to play out it shows the developing love growing between Achika and Noboyuki. Noboyuki is busy designing his dream house (the current Masaki house). Also we
learn more about the criminal Kain, who was originally captured by the Galaxy Police and one of the Juraian kings. Kain is repulsed by the power of Jurai. Also a new character is introduced (don’t worry, he’ll be gone by the end of the movie), the mysterious operative A who is bent on capturing Kain, and Ryoko in the bargain if he can.

    Achika’s class goes on a field trip to Tokyo (where Washu predicts Achika will be attacked), and so followsthe Tenchi clan. With updates from Washu Tenchi finds out that Kain is going to attack his mother at Tokyo Tower, and that it will take a great amount of Jurai's Power to defeat him. She also sends back special
generators to be placed around the city that will amplify Tenchi's power. While everybody goes off to place the generators Tenchi follows Achika to the tower to watch over her.
     Kain attacks while Tenchi, Noboyuki, and Achika are in an elevator with other students. When the try to hide in the observation deck Kain and Tenchi bagin to brawl it out. Just as it looks like Tenchi ma be beaten his mother steps in, halfway knowing what she is doing. When the generators turn on Kain gets sucked into subspace, and takes Achika and Noboyuki in with him. Now it's up to Tenchi, Ryoko, and Ayeka to go to subspace and fight Kain on his own turf.

   While she faces Kain in subspace the power of jurai opens Achika's eyes as she understands her power,that Tenchi is her son, and that she will die and leave him alone while he is still young yet. Tenchi arrives to do battle with Kain, and though he is far more powerful than Yosho he is stil not powerful enough to defeat Kain. Until Achika weilds sword Tenchi. It turns out Achika is far more powerful tha both Yosho and Tenchi! Achika battles Kain to his oblivion and the group moves to escape when he begins to come back. But Washu's invention (The Dimentional Cannon) operated by Kiyone delivers one massive final punch that destroys Kain for good.
     Before they are taken back by Washu, Ayeka and Ryoko talk erase Achika and Noboyuki's memories after she promises to live her life to the fullest before she dies. Ayeka, Ryoko, and an unconscious Tenchi go back to the future, and Achika and Noboyuki spend the remainder of her life together happily.


Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness (Manatsu no Eve)

At first I expected this movie to kinda be a follow up to the first one, so I was really
ticked off when I watched it and all the facts had changed around. Then I got the OVA
videos and realized what was going on. This video is off of the OVA tapes, not the TV
series at all!

     Startica is a celebration on Jurai, similar to Christmas on Earth celebrated on the
21st or 22nd of June. During one such Startica on Jurai something happens between
Yosho and a demon that makes her hate Yosho with a passion. To lash out at him she
creates something to strike at Tenchi.
     While Tenchi is walking back from the shrine he meets a girl on the steps who calls
him Papa, and won’t leave him! She follows him home and sends everybody into a
frenzy. How could Tenchi have a daughter? And with who? She sends Ryoko into a
frenzy! As Ryoko tries to attack her, Mayuka lashes out with what looks like the
lighthawk sword, until Yosho stops her that is. Ryoko and Ayeka are just quivering on
the edge watching her.
     Eventually Ayeka and Ryoko take to guarding Tenchi’s room, so while she can’t get
in Mayuka starts to play with Sasami. They begin to form a bond, and become really
good friends. Mayuka reveals se brought a present for Tenchi, a hologram of a Startica tree. But whe it’s opened everybody falls asleep and Mayuka goes into some sort of trance. She brings Tenchi out for a walk,right about when Ryoko wakes up. Just as Ryoko finds them Mayuka kisses Tenchi (not a father-daughter kiss) and they start to dissapear. Ryoko grabs Mayuka and lets her drop over the lake! Later on she wakes up high in a Cedar tree until Grandpa finds her later that night.
     When she finally gets back Mayuka attacks Ryoko. Ryoko and Tenchi have a fight and yell until Tenchi actually slaps her in the face!! Whats that all about. Ryoko runs away for awhile, while the rest of the family lights fireworks. While they’re doing so Yuzuha commands Mayuka to light all the fireworks at once, until Tenci comes to the rescue. At
the same time Katsuhito has a talk with Washu in her lab.

   Mayuka is really making friends with the family, but
Yuzuha makes her try to take Tenchi away. (Mayuka has a really weird way of trying to teleport people). As she’s about to succeed Yosho steps in and puts a stop to things as Mayuka runs away. When Sasami tries to help Yuzuha
makes Mayuka take her to the Dimension of Darkness,and
Tenchi and Ryoko follow after. Wen they finally catch up with Mayuka her demonic side has taken over. Tenchi’s Jurai powers don’t work in the dimension of darkness and it’s up to Ryoko to keep them safe as they are attacked by
demonic toys and christmas favors.
     Outside the dimension Yosho reveals that Yuzuha is the spirit of the tree of darkness, and that they could counter her with the tree of light, Tsunami. They can’t get to Tsunami of course, but Ryuo is right next to the house!
     While in the dimension Mayuka begins killing Tenchi, until Sasami breaks though to her, bringing back her light side. Mayuka relents and actually attacks Yuzuha until
Yuzuha kills her, leaving nothing but that power gem. Tired of playing anymore Yuzuha moves to kill Tenchi, growing giantlike ready to crush them all. At the last moment Ayeka
appears and slings a branch of the tree of light at Tenchi, healing him and giving him his Jurai powers. As he kills Yuzuha he realizes the connection between Yuzuha and
Yosho.
     To end off the movie on a happy note Washu says that if everybody agrees unanimously she will clone Mayuka. Ryoko actually agrees, because it was she who put Mayuka in the cedar ree instead of letting her drop. In the end she was sad Mayuka was dead. So as we end off the series the Masaki family has a new baby in the house to take care of. Think she’ll appear in the New Movie coming out soon?
