Magic: the Gathering Standard Tournament Deck
I played this deck in my second Tempest Standard (Type 2) tournament.
The tournament was a 4-round Swiss system, with the top four of the 16-person
field advancing to a single-elimination final.
My score was 3-1; two tied at 3-0-1, and three people tied with 3-1.
Unfortunately, for the second week in a row (!!!),
my tiebreaks weren't good enough to put me in the top four :( .
On the positive side, the deck performed very well for the second tournament in a row.
The round-by-round was as follows:
Round 1 v. mono-Blue, 2-1 -- Interesting games. His deck contained Ophidians as a
card-drawing machine, and the usual mix of counters. I also saw Man O War,
Quicksand, Rainbow Efreet, Air Elemental, Boomerang -- a typical mix. Overpowered him
in the first game with a continuous influx of creatures and a timely Armageddon.
The second game started poorly when I blocked an Ophidian with an Order of the White Shield and gave it first strike (huh?!). After throwing away a creature early, I couldn't get there before he did. He finished me off after I knocked him down to four (sounds like I could've used a couple of whacks from the Order...). Third game I rolled, Sleighting a Priest to Protection from Blue, dropped a Crusade, a Monk, a second Crusade, and that was game.
1-0, 2-1
Round 2 v. White, 0-2 -- Took a beating from a White weenee deck for the second time in
two tournaments. I WILL improve my sideboard against this. First game, we faced off
with Empyrial Armored creatures, but his Pacifism stopped my Armored creature,
and I didn't draw enchantment removal all game. Second game, mana hosed, enough said. Oh well, that's what happened to me the only other time I played him. On the bright side, he's one of the highest rated players in the state.
1-1, 2-3
Round 3 v. Green, 2-0 -- Single-elimination time - win-or-you're-out. My deck played
like you draw it on the board, two fifth-turn kills. Both games, early
Empyrial Armored Soltari Priests. The second game was a first for this deck -
first turn Plains, Lotus Petal, Soltari Priest, second turn another Plains, Lotus Petal,
Empyrial Armor, 5-4 shadow creature attacking. Ouch. My deck was too fast, and
luckily, he didn't pull any creature or enchantment removal.
2-1, 4-3
Round 4 v. Red, 2-1 -- A pitched battle, 3 games in 20 minutes. I love the current
Type 2 environment! First game, I never get going. He toasts me. Second game,
Empyrial Armor+Freewind Falcon+Spirit Link=Win. Third game, he's mana-hosed, and I
pull two Soltari Priests in my opening hand. I draw a early Empyrial Armor, and
the suffering doesn't last long.
3-1, 6-4
Overall, 3-1 match score, 6-4 in games. Interesting tournament -- the rounds were fast because no one played heavy control/countermagic.
