Magic: the Gathering Standard Tournament Deck

Deck: 4-color White Weenee ( W / R / B / U ) 5.4 -- Tempest

December 27, 1997

I played this deck in my fifth Tempest Standard (Type 2) tournament.
Unfortunately, I failed to write tournament notes for this one until after the January 4 tournament, so I can't remember all of the details. I guess that the January 4 tournament overwrote the December 27 tournament in my memory.

The tournament was a 5-round Swiss system, with the top four of the 16 (I think) person field advancing to a single-elimination final.
My score was 4-1 in the Swiss. which made the finals.
I lost in the Semifinals to finish 4-2 on the day, good for a 3rd/4th place tie.
I am not absolutely certain of the order of the following games, but its as close as I can remember.

The round-by-round was as follows:
Round 1 v. -- Pro-Bloom -- 2-0
His deck just didn't click either game.
I'm not convinced that Pro-Bloom can compete with any consistency in the current environment. The creature decks are fast -- often with 5 or 6 turn kills against a defenseless opponent -- and counter decks can disrupt it as well.
From my point of view as a White player, Disenchant and Aura of Silence can put a real hurt on the Pro-Bloom player, especially when combined with four sideboard Pyroblasts.
1-0; 2-0

Round 2 v. Red/Black, 2-1
Lost the first game, won the last two.
This deck had Shadow Guildmage, Erg Raiders, Wildfire Emissaries, and burn. I don't remember too many details except that I got pummelled by his creatures in the first game.
2-0; 4-1

Round 3 v. White weenee, 0-2
I hadn't seen this player too many times before, but he ripped through the regulars like a hot knife through butter for the first four rounds of the tournament, then lost in the last round, made the final four but lost the Semifinal match. He brought a solid deck, and didn't make playing errors against me.
I had the Quicksand curse in the first game: One land -- a Quicksand -- then draw no more land in eight draws. I actually ended the game with no permanents in play.
Game two was very close. I thought I had it won, but he top-decked a Crusade with two Plains and a 2/2 White creature on the table and me at three life (wasn't he supposed to side them out?!) to finished me off exactly. I had an Armored White Knight on the table and an Incinerate in hand, but I was tapped out.
2-1; 5-3

Round 4 v. Sligh, 2-1
Played him the week before as well. The two matches have run together in my memory.
3-1; 7-4

Round 5 v. Green/Blue Tradewind Rider/Propaganda, 2-1
In the first game he showed me how strong Tradewind Riders can be. In the second and third games I won, but I don't remember details, except that Pyroblasts are strong against his deck since there didn't seem to be any countermagic support.
4-1; 9-5

Quarterfinals v. Sligh, 1-2
He kept drawing Cursed Scrolls faster than I could Disenchant them in all three games. I won the second, lost the first and third. My eight protection from Red creatures pulled a disappearing act in the third game (with three Crusades on the table!).
4-2; 10-7
