A few remarks about demihumans
Most humans see the elves, dwarves, and halflings as one and the same. As such some refer to them as a single people. This is not out of any animosity.
It is born out of the average Mystaran's lack of knowledge concerning the demihumans. The demihuman is seen as a member of that particular demihuman race and called that.
Example- An Alfheim Elf and a Shiye-Lawr Elf would be referred to as an elf.
The addition is that the Shiye might be referred to as an Alphatian elf.
Most of these nicknames are not out of animosity. They are the simple way that various peoples refer to a particular nation of people. Some are born out of abbreviation. Others are alterred by slang.
Slang Names
Here are a few ideas for "rude" names for various nations. Most of these have proven quite effective for provoking barroom brawls.
Alfheim: Tree Hugger, Barkeater, Leafeater
Alphatia: Airhead (from "Followers of the Air" - this insult is probably popular in Glantri), Bluenose (meaning haughty - it is also a reference to the skin tone of the pure Alphatians)
Atruaghin: Redskin
Darokin: Daromaniac, Dippy (short for "Diplomat": suggests stupidity and cowardice)
Denagoth: Denagore (referring to the unpleasant habits and manners of those populations)
Ethengar: Ettie, Yakskin, Yellowface
Five Shires: Shorty, Little Man, Halfman, Cave-dweller
Garganin: Hulean (Garganinese don't think of themselves as Huleans - this is an insult)
Glantri: Godless Wizard (should pretty well cover it for most foreigners). Most Glantrians will not be offended by this one: if you wish for them to take them offense, call them by the name of their worst enemies among the Principalities. All who are not of Klantyre origin will surely take offense at being called "Highlander".
Heldannic Territories: Fanatic Northman, Hell-damn Knight
Hinterlands: Barbarian, Sub-thyatian (or just thyatian)
Hule: Holy Wacko, Holy Fool
Ierendi: Beachman, Southman, Islander
Ilioloosti: Ilio-loser, Bookworm (Ilioloosti is a scholarly city-state)
Kaarjala: Northern Nomad (only Vaarana are nomadic, urbanized Kaarjalans would take offense at this), Reindeer Lover (connotations that they do more than milk/eat reindeer), Savage
Karameikos: Thyatian (to a Traladaran)
Kastelios: Gouger, Sea-cheat, Water-rat (references to sometimes shady business practices in sea trade), Corker (Kastelios exports cork as well), Little Thadder
Littonia: Cupper (reference to high balsams and other alcohol consumption), Antalian, Heldanner (Littonians have a history of not liking Antalian-stock people), Rube, Northern Nomad, Savage
Minrothad: Thadder, Thaddy, Sea Swindler
Mivosian: Imperialist, Iron booter, despot (reference to despotic militaristic government), Thug, Trench-digger (reference to frequent wars and brutality)
Northern Reaches: Hornhead
Norwold: Northfool, Icebreath
Ochalea: Narrow eyes, Ochie, Preachster
Pearl Islands: Blackface, Nuarall (every name seems to have "Nuar" in those isles)
Rockhome: Rockhead, Stoneface
Shadow Elves Territory (Aengmor): Tree Killer, Dark Elf, Pale One, Bigears
Shiye-Lawr: Trickster elf, Tree Hugger
Thyatis: Imperial Trickster, Imperialist, Storm Soldier (this is especially effective with Thyatians who are NOT of Hattian origin)
Sind: Sandman, Thinman
Wendar: Wendie, Iced elf (for the elves)
Yavdlom: Fortune Teller, Blackface, The-wine Seer
Ylaruam: Desert Zealot, Harem Guard (this one is particularly nasty and should not be used in the presence of an armed Ylari)
