Kareen's Mirror

by CyanBlade

It was a dark, moonless night in the bustling city of Travar. Kurtan had finished his shift aboard the Dauntless, and was looking forward to a little R&R at a tavern. As he passed a grime-filled alleyway in the merchant district he paused as he heard a scream. When he peered into the alleyway he saw two men - no, one man and a much smaller man the size of a toy, locked in a desperate struggle. Each had hands clenched around the other's neck, each locked in the other's unflinching gaze.

But what made his heart stop was that they were both identical in every aspect, even their grunts and the way they clenched their teeth were exactly the same. Kurtan was a simple Troll Sky Raider, he helped pilot mining ships, and he had no intention of finding out what demented game this was. And then it ended, the man's eyes first became white and then brown again and he stood up, tossing the now limp doll aside. The man now locked eyes with Kurtan and asked if he played darts. When Kurtan said yes, he gave a deep and somewhat unsettling laugh and replied, "would you care to join me, I feel as though I haven't tried my hand at it in centuries…"

Kareen's Mirror is a doll approximately two feet tall that is an amazing rendering of a Name-giver (more precisely, the last Name-giver that wove threads to it). The expression on its face is the same as that of its previous owner's when the thread was severed either through death or otherwise. Almost certainly a pre-Scourge relic, this item was originally made by a Human Theran Wizard/Nethermancer named Merfum Tulic who wanted to test the limits of magic transference of adept abilities. It is safe to say that Merfum was the first victim of his ill thought out experiments.

Maximum Threads: 1
Spell Defense: 15

Thread Ranks

Rank 1
Legend Points:
300
Key Knowledge: The bearer must know the Name of Kareen's Mirror.
Effect: Kareen's Mirror instantly adjusts itself to look like a miniature version of the bearer. The bearer gains a spell matrix of rank equal to the rank of the thread attached to Kareen's Mirror. The spell matrix may only be used when the bearer is within 10 yards or less of Kareen's Mirror.

Rank 2
Legend Points:
500
Key Knowledge: The bearer must know the Name of the last owner of Kareen's Mirror.
Effect: : The bearer gains a second spell matrix of rank equal to the rank of the thread to Kareen's Mirror. The same restrictions from rank 1 concerning using the spell matrices still apply.

Rank 3
Legend Points:
800
Deed: The bearer may re-Name the doll. This blood magic ritual animates the doll for a year and a day. The owner Names the puppet, and sacrifices six drops of blood (two permanent damage) to give it life. Its attribute steps are 2 less than the owner's corresponding steps. The puppet has a statistics which correspond to its attributes and update themselves accordingly if the bearer increases his or hers (i.e., to get the stats, take the bearer's attributes and subtract six to find defenses, unconsciousness ratings, etc.). The doll is completely loyal to the bearer, and usually possesses all of its owner's annoying personality traits. This deed is worth 1300 legend points.
Effect: See above. In addition, the bearer may loan the doll one non-spellcasting-related talent of hers that she may not use as long as the doll keeps it. This excludes Spellcasting, all Threadweaving talents, anything relating to fetishes, and of course spell matrices.

Rank 4
Legend Points:
1300
Key Knowledge: The Name of the creator of Kareen's Mirror - Merfum Tulic.
Effect: The doll may now borrow 2 non-spellcasting-related talents at once as per the rank 3 ability. The doll and the owner may now communicate telepathically (Thought Link equal to thread rank for use only with the doll). The bearer may store a number of karma within Kareen's Mirror equal to the attached thread's rank. The karma stored in Kareen's Mirror are put there through a normal karma ritual and may be used in the same way the bearer normally uses karma. Karma points stored in this way do not count towards the bearer's maximum karma total, but the bearer must be within 10 yards of the doll to use the karma.

Rank 5
Legend Points:
2100
Key Knowledge: The bearer must learn where the true wood woven into Kareen's Mirror came from and what type of wood it was - The Servos Jungle.
Effect: The doll may now borrow 3 non-spellcasting-related talents at once as per the rank 3 ability. The bearer gains an ability to sense how the doll is feeling much like the Empathic Sense talent (treat as Empathic Sense at thread rank for use only with the doll). In addition, one of the two matrices is now an enhanced matrix, again at a rank equal to the thread rank attached to Kareen's Mirror.

Rank 6
Legend Points:
3400
Deed: The bearer must weave, or have woven for her, another piece of true wood from the same place as the rank 5 Key Knowledge described. This deed is worth 2100 legend points.
Effect: The doll may now borrow 4 talents at once as per the rank 3 ability. However, the bearer may now give any of their talents to the doll, including magic ones. The doll may now also spend karma on any of the talents held within it that the owner would normally be able to spend karma on. In addition, the bearer may now through a ten-minute ritual while in close contact with the doll exchange bodies with the doll. The doll will openly seek or even create opportunities for this to happen and the bearer will need to make contested Willpower/Willforce roll to regain their rightful body if the doll chooses to fight for it. This can get ugly if the bearer happened to have leant the doll their Willforce talent…
If the doll succeeds, the bearer is now trapped within Kareen's Mirror, destined to be the reflection of its owner until she can escape through the same method. The (former) doll, now in the former bearer's body, takes and gains all of the bearer's magical abilities: the bearer's discipline, questor powers, and everything that was tied to their pattern. The PC's adventuring is then over but they may choose to continue as the former doll. The doll's original personality will assert itself over the late PC's in the bearer's former body, but a strong influence will remain.
