Chilli's Page of Wisdom

finally, what you've all been waiting for...the infamous "skate park concert"! also known as

THE DSPC BENEFIT CONCERT!

we held the concert at the Armouries in Dundas, and for the price of what we payed to rent it out ($0) it wasn't too bad. The sound wasn't that great, but it was pretty much what we expected, you can't expect that great of sound to come from an old place like the Armouries. The sound system was great though, we were quite pleased with that. One thing i liked was the lighting, it was good, made the bands shine, what else can i say about that? right then...

The first band to get up on stage was Child Labour Force. These guys are pretty new, but they had it all together. It's always hard to be the first ones to get on stage, but it didn't seem to bother Child Labour Force Ice Ice babythem. Made up of Arjun (vocals, bass), Danny (Guitar, b/u vocals), Davy (guitar, b/u vocals) and Jeremy (drums) they make up that heavy/punk type of sound that'll kick your ass. Maybe it was just me, but the lead microphone was turned up a bit too much, it wasn't equal with the rest of the mics and guitars and stuff, so Arjun was pretty damn loud. Aside from that, they put on a good set and kicked the night off with a bang. I'd hafta say, the overall best part of the performance, was when they had this guy James Brown with pink hair come up and sing Ice Ice Baby. It was hilarious, and damn well covered too! Steve also got down and got funky and showed off his breakin skills. In all Child Labour Force was a great way to start off the show.

Blue Vitrol The next band to play was Blue Vitrol, a four peice metal band from Parkside in Dundas. The consist of Ian (vocals,) Joe (bass, b/u vocals), Mark (guitar) and Pat (drums). Blue Vitrol are very talented, from Joe's 6 string bass to mark's crazy ass guitar solos to pat's fatass double bass drums 6 w/ toms. They don't play the kind of music most the auidence really came to see, but none the less they were i was so mesmorized by mark's solo i couldn't hold the camera straight quite entertaining. Their sound was sorta like Creed/Rage/Metallica, an assortment of different types of metal. They did a cover of Rage Against the Machine's Killin in the Name Of, and i amongst other's was quite impressed. in some of their own songs, guitarist Mark Paulseth would break into these amazing guitar solos that left some guys with their jaws hanging open. Right after Blue Vitrol's set was over, we got some complaints from the neighbours that the concert was too loud. A cop on a bike stopped by and told us to do something about the noise or they'd hafta shut us down. So we had to call all the punks inside and close the doors. It was kinda messy but the show went on and they didn't shut us down, thank god for that.

The third band up was the Dupes. We weren't too sure if these guys were gonna show up cause we never got complete confirmation from them. Sure enough though, they showed up right on time. the Dupesminus 2 members, plus 2 filling in. Brandon (vocals/guitar) and Manny (drums) were the 2 actual members, the other 2 i didn't get their names, but they were on guitar and bass and came out with masks on. They opened by covering the first 2 Blink 182 songs off their new album. i think Blink 182 is on of Brandon's main influences, it really shows on the music they play. They have that punk/pop sound that's fun to jump to. Because the guys that were filling in didn't know too much of the kick itDupes music, they were limited to what they could play. They called out if anyone knew how to play the Goldfinger song Mable. So i ran up onto the stage and took the guys guitar and played the rythm part. The guy whose guitar i borrowed used to be in a metal band and he has the strap really high, and i'm used to having it really low. Anyhoo, we played the song and it was cool, although i wasn't too sure on the volume of my guitar. The Dupes were one of my fav bands of the night, they made me wanna shake my ass, and when a band does that you know it's all good.

The band in the fourth slot was Dundas' very own ska band Smiling Politely. they consist of mike Goran's so fucking hardcore (vocals) chris (guitar) Bug (guitar) goran (bass) tim (drums) mike (alto sax) katherine (bari sax) ryan (trumpet) and lisa and laura (back up vocals). Yes, that is a lot of members, infact they couldn't fit on the stage, so we had to those crazy horns...put the horns on the floor. but the got clip on mics so they were happy, and so were we. They opened with a new song More Than A Stealing, and so the skankin began. They played some of their classics like Get The Funk Out of my Face and Library Club (when you've seen em as much as i have they're classics). They also covered Reel Big Fish's Sell Out, and Save Ferris' Everything i Want to Be which featured Lisa and Laura singing a duet. I've seen these guys quite a lot of times, and their performance was one of the best i'd seen from them. They had a lot of people skankin in the pit and gave the concert a good atmosphere.

the band to have the spot in the line up right before Trunk was Another Lost Cause. At the beginning of their setnice tattoo pat Another Lost Cause Chris and Steve (dspc members) came out on a little bikes and attacked steve's friend with pies and he ended up chasing them all over the place. i don't think the audience picked up on what was happening, but it was funny none the less. back to Another Lost Cause, they're a five peice punk band outta Burlington and they kick some ass. They consist of Damien (vocals) Pat and Arf (guitars, b/u vocals) Andrew (bass) and Beano (drums). They've been playing for a few years and it really shows. I was very impressed by their drummer Beano, he was so amazingly fast! I tried to get a pic of him but he hit the cymbal right when i took it, so as you can see it's just Pat the guitarist. One good thing about Another Lost Cause is they get the audience involved a little. A few of their songs they would get everyone in the crowd to sing a long in the chorus. However, i was too busy trying to get some nice pictures to remember the words....bah, oh well, great band, great set.

Doug with the metal sign Well, after enjoying all the lovely high school bands, it was time for Raw Energy's crazy bunch of Punks outta Burlington, TRUNK! I'd been listening to their '96 cd Beaned Up Polkas to get a taste of what these guys would be like. Made up of Doug (vocals) Brad (guitar, b/u vocals) Mike (guitar) jerry (bass) and Ty (drums), these guys with their aggressive punk/hurtcore stylings came through to rock the old roof of the Armouries. Some songs such as No. 5 and No Tomarrow i recconized off Beaned Up Polkas. They also played some stuff off their new album Throwin' the Horns. They even decided to go on the internet before their gig and find some info on the town of Dundas. They read off a bunch of facts from the good ol town of Dundas, and said if anyone can name a fact that they don't know, they get the fancy booklet. Someone mentioned the fact that we have the highest teen pregnancy rate in North America, so they won the booklet. yep, it's Trunk alrightGoran from smiling politely kept yelling out "they have bleached hair!" until Doug started to ask what was up with that and made fun of Goran asking him if he was on the Dundas football team. it was pretty funny, and they appologized and offered Goran a beer for after the show. They closed off their set by playing that Joker song (i'm a joker, i'm a smoker, i'm a midnight toker...) A few times instead of that i head "I'm a joker, i'm a smoker, i'm a midnight stroker (pretending to whack off) i didn't mean to cum on you". But i guess that's just some of the crazy antics you can expect from Trunk. If they're in your town, go see em, they wont bite......well, just behave and maybe you'll be lucky.

for stuff on Trunk, the Raw Energy site has a Trunk page

thanx to Skizm for pretty much organizing the whole thing, all the bands who played, everyone who helped out with the concert doing what we asked them too, and everyone who came out to this crazy shindig. if all goes well we'll have another one in the fall.
