How To

Change Cursors

A cursor is a small icon/animation for the mouse pointer to represent certain system event. Static cursor comes with a '.cur' extension while animated one comes with a '.ani' extension. You can use a static one no matter how your system is configured, but for animated cursors, you must have 32-bit driver for your hard disk in order to see the animation. All animated cursor on this site requires high color or above for best quality. Just click the Control Panel\ Mouse\ Pointers tab and browse for your favorite cursors.

If you find that the cursors are not displayed in correct colors, make sure you are running at least a high color desktop and have checked the "Display icons using all possible colors" box in the Plus! tab of "Display" section in Control Panel.

Change Icons

An icon is a small picture representing a shortcut. Icons usually come with '.ico' extension. In Win95 you can easily change the icon of a shortcut by right clicking on it and browse for the right icon.

All icons found in this site are best viewed in 48x48 size, high color or above.

If the icons are displayed weirdly (incorrect colors), follow the below procedures to solve the problem(Microsoft Plus! or Windows 98 users only).

  • Change your display setting to high color or above.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Click the "Display" icon.
  • Click the "Plus!" tab(for Microsoft Plus! users) or "Effects" tab(for Windows 98 users).
  • Check the "Display icons using all possible colors" box.

Install Startup/Shutdown Logos

Startup screen is the picture you see on Windows startup. It is a file called "logo.sys". To change the startup screen, you need to copy the logo file (logo.sys) to the Windows directory (for Windows 95 without Microsoft Plus!) or root directory (for Windows 95 with Microsoft Plus! or Windows 98). For shutdown/waiting screens, you need to copy logos.sys/logow.sys to your Windows directory. Please note that all startup logos can work in BOTH Windows 95 and Windows 98, no matter how the logos look like (even if words like "Windows 95" or "Windows 98" were explicitly written on the logos).

Install WinAmp Skins

To install the skins, download the zip files and unzip its contents into your winamp skin directory (eg - C:\WinAmp\Skins\). Bare in mind that some files need you to create an extra folder or else the files will be scattered all over in your Skins directory. To avoid this create a new directory (eg - C:\WinAmp\Skins\Natsumiamp\) before unzipping.

Now execute WinAmp and click Alt+S to activate the skin browser. Click on the directory the skin file is located (eg -
C:\WinAmp\Skins\Natsumiamp\). The new skin will be then displayed on your player.
