Bio: Andrew Rudolph Gunn was born the small city of New York on the North American continent of Earth in 2351. He grew up there, never venturing more than 100 kilometers from home. He attended Du Brul High School on the island of Manhatten. While there, he became fascinated with the expanses of space. The vastness of the galaxy, the untamable power of quantum singularities, the awesome number of worlds. It was all food for Gunn insatiable appetite for knowledge.
He also became fascinated with the expanses of inner space. He loved dissecting animals for biology class. The way all of the internal organs had evolved a specific shape and purpose was even more fascinating to Gunn than outer space. Both his teachers and his parents noticed a definite incline toward a medical career in Gunn.
When he finished high school in 2368, he knew there was only one way to satisfy himself. He applied to Starfleet Academy. He was accepted and he began courses in Starfleet Medicine. Because of his Medical training, he took five years to complete the Academy.
In 2373 he graduated and was given his first assignment. Assistant Chief Medical Officer aboard USS Appalachia. Just a few short months later Dr. Gunn would see his first combat situation, and a turn of events that would change his life forever.
A Borg cube entered Federation space on a course for Earth. The Appalachia was made a part of Admiral Hayes' fleet amassed in Typhon Sector. The cube smashed through the fleet, destroying several vessels, and continued its course for Earth. The Appalachia pursued along with many other ships, including the Defiant and Bozeman, and finally caught up to the cube in Earth orbit. The Appalachia was pummeled by the Cube. It wasn’t long before the shields fell and Drones began beaming aboard. In the first few seconds, a dozen crewmembers were assimilated. The drones also injected their nanoprobes into the ships systems, attempting to assimilate the entire vessel. The crew fought back with phaser rifles and bare fists...and succeeded. All of the drones were killed, and the shields were raised, although at minimal power. The Appalachia managed to get back on her feet in time to assist the Enterprise in destroying the Cube. Still, there were billions of nanoprobes coursing through the EPS relays. In sickbay, Gunn assisted the Doctor is treating injured crewmen, however it was an overwhelming task. The ship’s CMO called for the Emergency Medical Hologram. The EMH, however, was unresponsive. Gunn walked over to the control panel for the EMH to attempt a manual activation. Instead of initiating the EMH program, the panel exploded and blew Gunn backwards to the floor. A piece of the panel landed on his left hand...and it was saturated with nanoprobes. They began to automatically assimilate his hand and lower arm. Metal sockets began to pop from his skin like flowers. His entire body may have been assimilated had the CMO of the Appalachia not activated an electric field dampener around Gunn's body. The nanoprobes became dormant before they could assimilate above Gunn's elbow.
The Appalachia limped into Spacedock for repairs and Gunn was transferred to Intensive Care there. The doctors considered removing his arm, but Gunn convinced them otherwise. He realized that a Borg appendage would prove very useful in the field of medicine. After 3 months in recovery, Gunn was released from the ICU and reactivated to Starfleet service. He was reassigned to starbase 565 as Chief Medical Officer, and promoted to Lieutenant JG.
A short time after the infamous Hirogen Incursion of 2377, Gunn accompanied the senior staff of Starbase 565 to Risa for a much needed vacation. Gunn took a shuttle to a Class-M moon of a gas giant in the system for some solitude. While there, Gunn stumbled onto a secret Romulan base. He found night vision absolutely essential in a tactical situation. However, having no light intensification technology available, Gunn injected some of his own nanoprobes into his left eye. As intended, the nanoprobes created an optic implant.
A short time later back at Starbase 565, Gunn discovered his cognitive abilities and memory were vastly increasing. A self-exam showed a neuroprocessor was also created in Gunn’s brain. This fact, he has yet to make public.
As it stands now, Gunn has only three normal fingers on his left hand. His index and middle fingers are now fully mechanical devices. He has assimilation tubules built into his fingers, and a very limited supply of nanoprobes. Given time, however, he can generate more. His optic implant is plainly visible. It includes sensors for the entire range of the EM spectrum. Also attached is laser range finder/materials analyzer. Gunn normally deactivates the red beam as it tends to cause eyestrain in most humanoids.
