Giant Pandas were first mentioned in a description of Mountain and Rivers, the earliest Chinese geography text more than 2,000 years old. In it, the Panda is described as a " bear like black and white animal that eats copper and iron and lives in the Qionglai Mountains of Yandao Country. Books written 1,700 years ago in the Western Jin dynasty present the Panda as a symbol of peace because it does not feed on living creatures. As a symbol of peace and friendship , Pandas have a long history as Chinese gifts. It was not until the 20th century that the Panda became known to the rest of the world.
