BACKGROUND: King Calamari was an ancient Sea Bloober. Legend has it that he took the sunken ship he lived in down himself, and remained to make it his home and torture the ghosts of his victims.
The giant creature has a large jewel-encrusted crown that protects his head, it was most likely made from treasure being transported by the ship's crew. While King Calamari took the ship for his own, the shark pirate Jonathan Jones and his crew managed to claim a piece of the ship for themselves. King Calamari was destroyed by Mario and his friends when they went under the sea to search for one of the Seven Stars.

BATTLE PLAN:
Attack Pattern: When fighting King Calamari, you will first have to take on two sets of three tentacles each. Then you will fight the monster's head and two more tentacles. The tentacles will use regular attacks and also a toss attack which sends one character off the screen for one turn and causes fear. King Calamari's head will attack with several magic spells, the worst are Drain Beam which causes medium damage to all party members, Ink Blast which causes high damage to one character, and Sand Storm, which causes fear in all party members.
Basic Strategies: The tentacles are strong against magic, and the head is strong against physical attacks. Fire and possibly Geno Beam are good magic choices. Bowser's Terrorize works surprisingly well, but it costs an awful lot of FP. Thunder attacks are surprisingly weak, Thunderbolt might be OK if there are three tentacles on the screen, but don't waste it on l less than that. It's a good idea to beat the tentacles one at a time, they usually take about 3 timed-hits.
Advanced Strategies: The best party to fight King Calamari is Mario, Geno and Peach (Princess Toadstool). Use Geno Boost on Mario and/or Geno, they may be able to beat tentacles with one timed-hit after this! Have Peach back them up with regular attacks and Group Hugs. Group Hugs will cure fear. When you get to the head, attack the two tentacles first, you have to beat them even if you kill the head, so it's good to get them out of the way. For the head, use the most powerful Fire attack Mario has, and have Geno either use Geno Beam or regular attacks. The Princess should use regular attacks when possible, and Group Hugs if the party is weak.
If you have Bowser or Mallow in your party, they should concentrate on using regular attacks. Bowser's Terrorize might be worthwhile, especially when you get to the head. Use it early on! Mallow should also use HP Rain when party members are low on energy.
When a Tentacle attacks, it will sort of whip one character. Try to press A just before it finishes whipping and you hear the "crack" sound. King Calamari's regular attack kind of looks like a "kiss". Try to press A right at the end of the kiss. You can also block the Ink Blast attack by pressing A just before the bubble pops.
