John was arrested for killing Tony and he spent Christmas Eve in jail all alone. He was the one that arrange the christmas party for the people of Aremid. In that party, there was a little girl, a sad girl, that lost both of her parents in a car accident and was raised by her aunt. She hardly spoke to anyone ever since but that night, she went down to visit John at his prison cell. That was a powerful scene. One of Drake's best scenes. It was heartbreaking and touching.
Lucy came down the stairs and looked at John. He waved to her and smiled, surprised to see a little girl down there.
John: How did you get in here?
Lucy: The door wasn't locked.
She pulled up a chair and set in front of the cell, looking at him.
John: Hey, hey, I think maybe you should go back up to the party.
Lucy: I wanted to see you.
John: you wanted to see me?
Lucy: Yes. I heard some people say that the man down here is the one who made the party.
John (smiles): Well, I might have helped a little but the man who made the party is Santa Claus. You might have seen him upstairs. He wears this big long red coat and has a big long white beard.
Lucy: You are the real Santa. He is just your helper.
John (surprised and touched): You know that Santa's got a lot of helpers.
Lucy: I don't know much about him.
John: Oh, that's right. Christmas is not a big thing here in Aremid, isn't it?
Lucy looks at him and shake her head no.
John: Oh...I hope your mommy and daddy came along to the party with you.
Lucy (in a quiet voice): I don't have a mom and dad. I live with my aunt.
John (tears fill his eyes): I am sorry. I can see that hurts a lot.
Lucy (in a sad voice): Yes...
John: I don't have a mommy and daddy either.
Lucy (looks surprised): you don't?
John is very emotional, shakes his head no.
Lucy: Did you have a mom and a dad when you were little?
John bit his lips and nod.
Lucy: did you have Christmas?
John: I don't remember a lot...Of course, of course we had Christmas.
Lucy: did Santa bring you toys and stuff?
John: Oh, yes.
Lucy: That's why you probably like Christmas so much.
John: Yeah...let me tell you something I learned. I want to share it with you. It's about Christmas. Christmas isn't really about toys and games and Santa Claus. Those are just ways to express the true meaning of Christmas.
Lucy: The birth of Jesus.
John: That's right, yeah...and in celebrating the birth, a lot of traditions have been past down trough the years, including Santa Claus. But most of all, Christmas is about LOVE. It's about the love in your heart that you may feel for baby Jesus, if you believe that way, or just the love that you feel for anyone. Now, your heart may be feeling very empty right now but you know what's gonna happen? Someone is going to come along and they are going to fill your heart up with love, and than you will be able to share that love with them in return.
Lucy: How do you know that?
John: Because it happened to me. You see, I lost this GREAT love once and than I found it again in someone else. She is s wonderful person. (he whispers) Love is the greatest gift of all...and if I could with you or anybody else the best Christmas present ever, it would be just to know that love is the most important thing in the whole world. And sometimes in life we get hurt, and sometimes you are thinking you are not going to be able to stand the pain and emptiness any longer, but you want to know something? - You are never alone. Never alone. Now, your aunt, so you know what I think? I bet that her heart is just full with love for you (He opens his hands wide open) and what you have to do is open up your heart to receive it and once you do that, you'll have all this love in there (He points to her heart) to share with her. That's how it works, you see. This all love thing, it has t be shared.
They look at each other for a moment.
John: I am so glad you came down here. I am glad we had this chance to talk but you know what? I think you better get back up to the party before Santa's helper goes up in the chimney.
Lucy stands up and put the chair back in it's place. She looks in his eyes.
Lucy: I hope you get what you want for Christmas.
John: Yeah, well, there is only one thing want this year and I don't think I am going to get it.
Lucy: I hope you do. Thanks again for the party. Marry Christmas.
He pulled a green leaf out of his pocket and without words hands it to her. She takes it and smiles.
John: Marry Christmas.
