Marlena is lying at the bottom of the pit. She's lost all hope of being rescued. She has been hallucinating about John and Roman. She tires to get up but she's too weak.
Marlena: John! Roman! I can't hear you. What are you trying to say?
She brings her arm up to cover her eyes.
Marlena: What? Is somebody there? Is somebody up there? Who is it?
Suddenly there's a bright light shining down on Marlena.
Marlena: Who's there? Who's up there? I can't see. Who are you?
Her sister Samantha appear in front of her.
Samantha: It's me Marnie.
Marlena: Sami?!
Samantha: Yes it's me. Don't be afraid.
Marlena's crying.
Marlena: It's so good to see you.
Samantha: It's very good to see you too.
Marlena: What are you doing here?
Samantha: Well I'm here for you silly. I'm here to take you back with me.
Marlena: Back?
Samantha: Across to the other side.
Marlena: No. No. No.
Samantha: I know it's very frightening for you but it's only because you don't know what to expect. That's what I'm doing here. I'm here to make sure you understand that it's all right. It really is all right.
Marlena: Sam don't do this to me alright.
Samantha: I'm not doing anything to you Marnie. It's not like when we were kids. This is wonderful...peaceful Marnie. You have a lot of friends here.
Marlena: Sam. Is...is DJ there?
Sam reaches for Marlena.
Samantha: He's wonderful. He's waiting for you.
Marlena: Oh! I can't! Sam I can't. I've go things that I have to do. I have things I have to do here. I'm not done. I have to finish some things and learn some lessons and I can't...I can't. I can't go now.
Sam fades away.
Marlena: Sam? Sam! I...I
can't.
Scene ends...
The scene opens to the dark abandoned warehouse. Walls, pipes all demolished around John, holding an unconscious Marlena in his arms. Marlena begins to whisper as she comes to...
Marlena: No...no...no...
John: That's it, Doc, come on back...
Marlena: No...no...no...
John: Wake up, come on...
Marlena: Please, don't...no...
John: You're doin' fine..come on back....
Marlena: No...no...
John: Wake up, wake up..come on back..wake up...
Marlena raises her head slowly from John's chest and whispers.
Marlena: You're real...
She touches his face.
John: I'm real, Doc, it's the real thing...
Marlena sobs and leans her head back on his chest and hugs him like she'll never let him go.
Marlena: Oh God...
John: It's all right, it's all right, it's ok....
Scene ends...
...Scene opens with John still leaning against the wall, Marlena sitting across from him.
Marlena: John, I'm almost afraid to ask you this...
John: What?
Marlena: What happened to Roman...
John: It's all right. He's all right. He's out of the hospital, he's his own cranky self. He's tryin' to track you down. It was touch and go, but he's fine.
Marlena: Does anyone know we're here?
John: No. I tried to get a hold of Roman, but I couldn't get through...
Marlena: It's ok.
Marlena moves, accidentily brushing against John's leg, he gasps in pain.
John: Easy..easy..easy...
Marlena: What's the matter?
His face is a mask of pain, hers of concern.
John: I did somethin' to my knee.
John reveals an open gash.
Marlena: Let me see...
She kneels beside him, he trys to lift his leg forward, in agonizing pain.
John: I can't move it...
Marlena: Don't move any more.
John: I don't know about these things..but if I was a betting man, I'd say it's busted.
Marlena tears open the pant leg further, as John gasps again.
Marlena: Ok, ok..hold on..hold on, I've got you. I don't think it's broken, it's dislocated.
John: That doesn't sound too bad, how do we relocate it?
Marlena: We, ah, put you under anesthesia then we straighten the whole thing out.
John: Oh...all right, since we don't have the first, let's do the second, ok?
Marlena: I can't do that!
John: Why not, go ahead.
Marlena: I can't do that, I don't have the strength and I..you couldn't take the pain.
John: Oh come on, doc.
Marlena: Listen, if you can't stand, we can't get out of here.
John: We'll get out of here. Pretty soon they'll start...(he pauses). My car is parked right on top of here, someone's going to see it sooner or later. Just a matter of time till they get us out of here, Doc. Don't you worry 'bout that.
Marlena grimaces as she looks back at the knee.
Scene ends...
...Scene opens to Marlena leaning against John.
John: We've got to get out of here, Doc, now, I mean right now. You need food and water, so what do you say we move it, come on.
He says looking upward.
Marlena: You don't think I've tried that before...
She almost glares at him.
Marlena: I fell down from there and almost broke my neck.
John: You can do it. You're going to use me for a ladder. You're gonna climb right up me and I'm going to get you outta here.
Marlena: We're leaving?
John: That's it. We're going to start right now.
Marlena: What about your knee?
John: My knee's going to start screaming for attention real soon.
Marlena: John?
John: Let's just go for it now..come on, we're outta here...
John raises and she helps him struggle to his feet.
John: Come on, you're going to climb up me just like a ladder.
Marlena: Take it easy.
John: We can do it.
Struggles to the wall, Marlena climbs some rubble until she is on John's shoulders and she reaches upward.
John: Go!
Marlena: Go.
John: Go!
Marlena: John, hang on, hang on, are you ok?
John: Yeah...yeah
John suddently screams in pain, his knee gives way and they collapse.
John: I'm sorry...
Marlena: I'ts ok.
John: Let me try it again.
Marlena: No! We're not going to try it again. Don't move that leg again!
John: One more time.
Marlena: No, it's impossible.
John: One more time.
Marlena: I WON'T let you do this...no!
John: We're runnin' outta time It better not be impossible, I'd better tell you...
Marlena: Why are we running out of time?
John grimaces and looks upward.
Marlena: I've got you...
She says as she helps him sit back down.
Scene ends...
...Scene opens to Marlena sitting
against the wall.
Marlena: Would you believe that I would give five years of my life for a cup of water. No...no, just a little drop.
John: Doc, I bought this building, I saw the floor plans. One of these pipes leads to the water main.
Marlena: Don't you think they'd cut off the water before the demolition?
John: There's got to be some water still standing in it.
He inspects the pipe valve.
Marlena: What are you doing?
He tries to turn the wheel to the valve, but it's stuck.
John: Is there a pipe around there?
Marlena: Yeah.
She grabs a broken length of pipe and gives it to John. He uses it as a lever, but is having trouble holding his balance on one leg..
John: Easy...easy...
Marlena: You ok?
She moves behind him and holds him.
John: Just steady me...
Marlena: All right, all right...
The wheel starts to move.
Marlena: Hang on, hang on, you can do it...
A small trickle of water starts out of the pipe. Marlena fills her hand and hungrily puts it to her lips again and again.
John: Easy...easy...
Marlena: Mmmmmmmmm....
Scene ends...
...Scene reopens to John sitting
on the floor leaning against the wall. Marlena has her back to him, leaning
against his chest. His arms are around her protectively.
Marlena: At least I know now
that I'm not going to die of thirst.
John: No, there's plenty other ways we can do that.
Marlena: Sure, we can die of asphixiation or snake bite or lonliness or a person can simply die of being in the dark...
John: Doc! Doc, I'm sorry I brought it up, come on, come on, think positive thoughts. Stay with me here. Think somethin' happy. Like baseball. Did you know that God is a baseball fan?
Marlena: No.
John: Yeah, it's true. It's in the Bible. It's on the first page, what's the first line?
Marlena: In the beginning?
John: No, in the big inning.
Marlena: Oh?
Marlena smiles, then laughs. John hears a noise and looks upward.
John: Shhhhhh.....
The sound of machines can be heard.
John: Right on time.
Marlena: What?
John: The bulldoziers have started.
He leans his head back against the wall, gimacing painfully.
Marlena: Oh my God. They're going to bury us alive.
Scene ends...
...Scene opens with John moving Marlena to another part of the room, helping her sit on some rubble. He's hopping, using the pipe as a crutch.
Marlena: This really is it, isn't it?
John: No, this isn't it. We're going to have to make more noise than those damn bulldoziers.
Marlena: I don't have the strength.
John hobbles to the wall.
John: Well, I do. I have enough for the both of us.
He grabs a pipe and begins pounding on the exposed pipe on the wall and screams.
John: Hey!!!! There's somebody down here.
Marlena winces at the sounds.
Scene ends...
...Scene opens to John pounding
and screaming.
John: Come on! There's somebody
down here, anybody listening?
Marlena: John! They can't hear you!
John continues pounding.
John: It's all right, Doc. It
doesn't sound like they've started bulldozing this area yet, so we
still got a lot of time.
Marlena: How much time?
John: Enough.
Continues pounding and screaming.
John: We're down here!!!!
Marlena: John!
John: Doc, hang in there, hang in there, we're going to beat this!
Marlena: Are we?
John hobbles over to where she is.
John: You listen to me, I set up this whole demolition thing here.
Sits down beside her.
John: I worked for hours with the foreman on this. I know exactly what they're going to do and when they're going to do it and they're not going to be over this place for a long time, yet. Ok? So just trust me, ok?
Marlena: I do trust you.
John: Good. Then no more worrying.
Marlena: I can't not worry. My mind goes to all kinds of places. And I guess yours does too?
John: No, don't even think about that now. Come on!
Marlena: I know we have a chance and I know you will do all that you can to get us out of here.
John: That's right. I even hand picked the crew up there. The best in the business. They'll be very thorough. They'll check everything before they make a move.
Marlena: You mean they might find us before it's too late?
John: Yeah.
He smiles at her.
John: They're going to find us, no doubt about it.
Marlena starts to cry.
Marlena: Oh?
John: Don't you start cryin', come on, come on.
Marlena: I'm ok. I just keep thinking about all the things that I wanted to do and never did..
John brushes her hair back from her face tenderly.
Marlena: All the mistakes I made with Roman...
She sobs and looks at John.
Marlena: ...and with you. I really want to have a second chance.
John: Well, Doc, you're going
to get it, by damn, I'm going to give you that second chance.
Marlena falls into his arms,
her head against his chest as he grimaces in pain and looks upward.
Scene ends...
...Scene opens to Marlena sitting up again, John leaning against the wall.
Marlena: I really do want to believe you're right.
John: Well, good, do believe me. Just keep telling yourself over and over.
Marlena: I hate having regrets.
John: Everyone has them.
Marlena: I never did before this. At least, I never admitted that I did before this. I was always really busy, being in control, being perfect, you know? Determined.
John: Yeah.
Marlena: I guess I let everybody down, didn't I?
John: You know, you never let anyone down, Doc, except yourself. You got that? You're always there for people. You care, you give to your kids, to Roman, to your patients. You make a difference, you change people's lives for the better.
Marlena: Yeah, but not always for the better.
John: Oh yeah? Who's your source? Who you been talking to lately? Talk to me, I'm talkin' from facts. You changed my life, Doc. Yes sirree. You made me whole again, you made me whole again, Doc.
Marlena smiles warmly.
Marlena: John...
John: You know what I was like when I came to Salem? Of course, you do. Who was I, huhn? Where was I? I was out here. You talk about being in the dark. What'd you do? You just kinda reached out and kept reaching out, didn't you? Until you pulled me right in.
Marlena smiles radiantly, then her smile fades.
Marlena: But I wasn't afraid then. I wish I weren't so afraid now.
John: Yeah, well, I figured out what the problem is. You've been fighting this thing all alone. But you don't have to do that anymore. Because, in case you haven't noticed, I'm in the problem with you now. Ok? so, hey now, you've got to hang in there. Now you've got to fight a little while longer. You've got the fight in you, keep up your spirits. You've got to reach inside, find some heart, Ok?
Marlena looks doubtful.
John: You need some heart?
John reaches in his shirt and takes the chain from around his neck and holds it in his fist before Marlena.
John: There you go, St. Michael. He's a patron saint, he helps people when they go into battle. Bo gave this to Isabella when she was sick.
Marlena sobs quietly.
Marlena: Oh....
John: Some people may say it didn't do any good. But I'm not one of them because she did fine, Doc. It took guts, determination and heart. She put everything she had into it until the very end.
Marlena stares at the medal curiously.
Marlena: Roman wore this once...
John smiles.
John: Yeah. Pretty strange, isn't it? I mean, how many pepole, how many people do you know that could say, "No, I'm not Roman Brady, but I used to be.".
John smiles wryly. Marlena smiles.
John: On the other hand, how many people do you know that could say, "No, I was married to him once, but that's when I thought he was the man that I'm married to now."
Marlena laughs lightly.
Marlena: Oh, I didn't think we'd be laughing about it, exactly.
John: Why not, I mean why should our lives suddenly get normal, huhn?
John looks upward, concerned.
Marlena: Yeah, after all we've been through, who else could understand better than us?
John: I wouldn't change my past for anything, Doc.
Marlena looks at him seriously.
Marlena: Neither would I.
John sighs.
Marlena: Help me put this on.
Indicating the chain. She lifts her hair as he puts it around her neck. John makes a motion like the chain is charged with power now.
John: ZZZZZZZZZZZ
Marlena: Well, I feel better all ready.
John: Isabella loved you, did you know that?
Marlena: What?
John: She loved you. She had a hard time with the past, but in time she got over that. Actually she was kinda glad of it, grateful to you.
Marlena: Greatful to me?
John: Yeah. We had a lot of talks in Italy in her last couple of days, the kind of talks you only have when you know...she said that she wished she could have always been in my life, but since she wasn't, she was glad I had somebody and she was glad that it was you, because she knew that you were good for me.
Marlena has begun to cry and wipes away the falling tears.
Marlena: Well, I'm touched. Why didn't you ever tell me that before?
John looks upward, unable to meet her tear filled eyes.
John: I don't know. (Smiles) I suppose I thought that maybe... (pauses) I don't know, Doc. It's just one of those things you never get around to.
Machine noises interrupt the quiet.
Marlena: Is that a bulldozier?
John: I'm afraid so.
Marlena: How bad is it? You tell me, I can handle it.
John: Northing to handle, Doc, because we're getting out of here, right now, Doc.
John struggles to get up.
John: Right now, Doc, right now, Doc.
He picks up the pipe and starts beating on the pipes again and yelling.
John: Stop!!!! We're down here!!!!
Marlena looks down at the medal hanging down on her chest and begins praying.
Scene ends...
...Scene opens to John still pounding and screaming.
Marlena: John!!! Stop!
John: NO!!!!!
Marlena: I've got to say something and I have to say it now.
John stops at her serious expression and hobbles to where she's sitting and sits beside her.
Marlena: You were right. We have to fight.
John: That's right.
Marlena: But we have to be grateful too. Greatful for the memories we have, for the people that we've loved and the people who have loved us. And when we have a chance, we have to thank them. So I would like to thank you for loving me.
John: You remember our trip to Mexico last year?
Marlena: I do. What about it?
John: That's when I went down
there to tell the whole world that I was really Roman Brady. Well, we know
how that turned out, don't we?
Tears fall down Marlena's cheeks.
John: He was right, I was wrong. I lost...I lost my name, I lost my job and you...I lost everything that day.
Marlena: No, you had Isabella, you had Isabella.
John: That's right. I loved her and I will always love Izzy B. But you don't know how hard it was to watch you walk away with him.
Marlena closes her eyes in pain and tears cascade down her cheeks.
John: As much as I loved Isabella, there's apart of me that's always loved you, too, Doc.
Marlena sobs.
Marlena: I know...
The bulldozier noises get louder. Marlena falls into John's arms, her head on his chest. He wraps his arms around her as she sobs.
John: Get close, get closer, it's ok...
Marlena: Do you remember, a long time ago, we said to each other that if it ever had to end, we wanted to be together when it happened.
John: Yeah. But I didn't think
it would be like this though.
The noises increase and Marlena
cries out.
Marlena: Oh John, I'm glad we're together.
She holds on to him for dear life.
John: So am I, Doc. It's gonna be ok.
Marlena: I can't be brave.
John almost smiles as he holds her tightly, protecting her.
John: It's going to be ok, Doc.
John looks angrily upward and screams to the people above.
John: STOP!!!!!!!
Scene ends...
...Scene above is Abe and Roman searching the rubble. Below John struggles up as the dust is making Marlena cough.
John: There's got to be a way to get to them.
John and Marlena are both having trouble breathing. Both are coughing.
John: Let me give you something to breath through. I've got a bandana. The bandana's around my damn knee.
Seaches through his pockets, he find matches and has an idea.
John: Fire...fire.. We'll send up a damn smoke signal. You got something to burn?
Marlena starts taking off her jacket, vest, etc.
Marlena: Yeah, everything, my scarf.
They stuff all her things in a broken pipe that goes up.
Marlena: What if the pipe is stopped up and the smoke comes back on us?
John: Them's the breaks, it's our last shot.
Marlena: John....
He lights the fire and smoke billows.
Marlena: It's backing up...
John uses his jacket to fan it back toward the pipe.
Marlena: I can't breath...I can't breath.
John: Put you head as low as you can get it, Doc.
Marlena lays on the ground, coughing. John lays beside her, they are like spoons as he covers their heads with his coat. Above Roman and Abe see the smoke. The foreman says it's just dust, but Roman insists that dust settles and this is smoke rising. They begin shouting that someone is down there and tearing the debris away. John and Marlena listen intently.
John: They're clearing debris with their hands.
Marlena: They know we're here!
John: They seem to.
The trap door is removed and Roman looks through it from above.
Roman: Doc, John, What happened to you two?
Marlena: Roman!!
Roman: It's me, Doc. You're going to be fine.
Marlena: Take me home!
Marlena begins sobbing.
Roman: I'll get you, I'll take you home.
Scene ends...
...Scene reopens to Roman directing the men to get a rope.
John: Roman, tell them to get us out of here, the walls are going to collapse.
Roman: We're going to throw a rope and pull you out.
John: She's too weak to hold on.
Roman: We'll get a lader. Someone get a ladder!
Scene ends...
...Scene opens with Marlena climbing out and John right behind her. Marlena clings to Roman sobbing uncontrollably.
Roman: Oh thank God, you're alive. I'll never let you go again.
Marlena: I'm glad...
She continues sobbing.
Roman: Never...never. Honey, it's fine, everyithing's going to be all right..
Camera cuts to John watching Roman console Marlena. John's eyes are so full of pain and anguish, but you know it's not for his wounds.
Abe: It's good to have you back. We'll get an ambulance.
John's eyes never move from the scene of Roman holding and hugging Marlena, the pain in John's eyes is intense.
