Midi is a kind of file that is a kind of music.  MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and has been the rage among electronic musicians throughout its six year existence. It is a powerful tool for composers and teachers alike. It allows musicians to be more creative on stage and in the studio. It allows composers to write music that no human could ever perform. But it is NOT a tangible object, a thing to be had. MIDI is a communication protocol that allows electronic musical instruments to interact with each other.  MIDI is not an instrument name. Midi is a language or protocol between computer and musical instrument, which is similar to the computer data but much more contains musical information such as length, velocity, and etc.. Midi is an abbreviation of Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Midi also defines the system interface method and devices.

If you understand how to use sequencer, midi is almost in your hand. Sequencer is a software or device which records midi message and edits or modifies it, if needed. Sequencer uses parallel individual recording method called "TRACK". This is a same method with multi track recorder of audio tape. That is, it divides one side of tape to many lines and each line records each part, vocal, piano, guitar and so on. You do not have to record all parts simultaneously. Just record each part individually and edit it. For example record Piano on track 1 and do clarinet on track 2 listening it. If you failed clarinet, then just do it again with clarinet on track 2. There are two kinds of sequencer, one is software and the other is hardware. That is, Cakewalk Pro is a software and Yamaha QY-700 is hardware.
