Starcontrol I was a fairly simple, yet enjoyable sci-fi
strategy game. Yes, it was not anywhere near as good as
Starcon2, but not only is it a lot older game, but it is
a completely different type of game. The lesser number
of races ( 7 Alliance, 7 Hierarchy ) kept the game a lot
simpler. The only annoying part was the rotating
starfield, which was unfortunately brought back in
Starcon3. The combat is a lot different than Starcon2
or 3 as well. Since Starcon ran on the slow Sega
Genesis system, the combat involved a lot more thinking
about tactics, whereas Starcon2 Hypermelee involved more
piloting skills and quick action. Finally, while the
strategy was not up to the real-time strategy standards
of today ( C&C, Warcraft II ), it is good for its time.
