Nightfall's
Description:
Before you stands a man clad from head to toe in a tar like substance that
oozes around his body and sometimes joins with the shifting miasma of
darkness that surrounds him. Something about this embodiment of
darkness disturbs the souls of those that look upon him and his hollow
otherworldly voice send shivers of unexplained fear through all but the
bravest of beings. To see him finally confirms your childhood belief
that something lurked in the darkness of night. |
Thomas'
Description:
Average looking man with black hair and average height and build.
Looks in decent shape. The only thing that would set him out in a crowd
are his dark piercing eyes. |
Origin:
Until recently Thomas was a relatively successful horror novelist that
read and investigated the occult extensively to make his stories more
believable. His latest book was about ghosts and hauntings and he was
doing some research on haunted houses and sites. His research led him to
an old abandoned house in Vancouver still feared by the locals. It was
said to be haunted because it was build on Indian holy ground when the
city was young.
While investigating the house (at night because the ambiance was right)
he discovered a trap door in the basement and followed it down into the
murky depths. Under the house he found strange labs and books and
eventually an odd alter or headstone in what looked like a hidden
archeological dig. He was examining the alter he dislodged it and the
shadows came alive and.... well he woke up the next day in the basement
and felt the presence of the darkness within him.
The next night he transformed into Nightfall when he turned out the
bedroom lights. He as since explored his new powers a little and come to a
few conclusions. It seems that the darkness within him is alive and seeks
to protect him or it is partially controlled subconsciously. What has
happened to him he does not fully understand and he is trying to make some
sense of the books in the house (he bought the house and is living there
now).
Thomas always admired heroes and wished he could be one, but such was
not his lot till now. Now that he has the power he is compelled to use it
for the greater good. He has started with cleaning up the streets near
where he lives - frightening off thugs and drug dealers. Not for any
driving life experience, but just because he believes it is the right
thing to do.
Right now he is a growing urban legend. He can come and go pretty much
at will and his normal MO is to step out of shadows and bring a vast cloud
of darkness upon his victims. Nobody has seen anymore than a rolling cloud
of darkness and an otherworldly voice telling them "you are not
welcome here. the next time I will not be merciful" (man he has got
to lay off the pulp horror). |
Powers:
All of Nightfall's powers are related to a special type mystical,
extra-dimensional, elemental darkness (the kind of pure darkness all other
shadows aspire to be) that he can conjure, control, solidify, become, and
even enter the dimension that spawns it. The power is innate but he is
unsure if it is his own or because he is inhabited by some symbiotic
creature a darkness, a shadow elemental lives inside him in a symbiotic
relationship, or maybe he is becoming a shadow demon and was implanted
with their mystical seed.... (he could go on) |

 | Before gaining power Thomas would have had all Fair physical
attributes. He worked out a little and ran to stay in shape but that
was it. Now he is stronger, faster, much tougher, and has almost
boundless energy. Damn, he feels better than he ever did in life. |
 | Thomas has always been smart and has a mind hardened by a lifetime
of interest and research in the occult (some of the stuff he has seen
would turn your hair white - and that is just what normal mundane
people do to each other). |
 | Nightfall's Q-Rating low because nobody has seen him. It might
improve once the public is aware of him but it might not due to the
sheer creepiness factor around him. Thomas is a fairly
successful writer. |

Thomas has studied the occult most of his life, started with
a fascination with horror novels as a kid. He has become a successful
horror writer and does a great deal of research (both in books and in
person) to make his books more believable. On occasion he does a little
illustration for his novels. Once or twice he has worked with the police
as a consultant on the occult to help solve a crime or two. |

Powers
|
Power |
Level |
Description |
Darksight |
|
Thomas/Nightfall see in the dark as if it were day (but still see in the
light fine). Darkness, Thomas has discovered, sheds an
"illumination" of its own different from that of the light, but
no less beautiful. He can, of course, see through his darkness fields. |
Call the Darkness |
|
Thomas can transform into Nightfall at will by calling even the smallest
shadows near him to join with the darkness that blossoms out from within
him. |
Physical Boost |
|
Thomas/Nightfall is now stronger, faster, healthier, tougher, and has
almost boundless energy (as a matter of fact he doesn't really sleep much
anymore and spends time researching his powers and patrolling - did I
sleep yesterday or today... I can't remember been so busy). Damn, he feels
better than he ever did in life |
Regeneration |
|
Thomas/Nightfall heals in hours what it would take someone else to heal
in days. Unfortunately it seems that his blood is darker than usual and
any regenerated flesh has a shadowy look for a while. Has his blood been
getting darker?! He doesn't know if he could regenerate lost body parts
because he isn't stupid enough to cut off anything just to check. |
Elemental Darkness Immunity |
|
Thomas/Nightfall is immune to the potential side effects of his own
powers. The cold, chill, and energy sapping nature of the darkness doesn't
effect him. |
Nightfall only Powers |
Aura of Darkness |
|
Around Nightfall there is a shifting field of darkness that can range
from a shifting field of shadow to impenetrable darkness (that absorbs all
forms of energy). When he tones it down it almost appears as if there is a
cloak of shifting shadow and darkness around him. It ranges in size from
within a meter to about 30. Anyone caught in a fully manifested darkness
field cannot see or even sense other forms of energy like IR (it is cold
in there) and even radar as they are quickly absorbed within a foot or so.
Even sound is muffled and distorted in the field.
Imagine a cloud of darkness rolling down the hall at you and as the
first wisps of it reach the florescent lights they flicker and dim before
being engulfed in the cold and quiet dark. |
Dark Armor |
|
The darkness around Nightfall has hardened into armor that flows over
him like tar or blood. The armor has turned aside knives, clubs, and
handguns but he is unaware of its full power. |
Tendrils of Darkness |
|
Nightfall can manipulate strong tentacles of solid darkness (as strong
as the strongest man and as tough as steel, but somewhat elastic like
rubber) and even separate them to entangle a foe (although they dissolve
over time when separated). As of yet, he has only used at most two at a
time, like they were extensions to his arms and hands (forming new ones
after he "separated" them from the general mass of darkness).
Sometimes the darkness has moved things on its own (or subconsciously) so
maybe he could have more - but right now he is just learning to control
this power and sometimes it just has a will of his own. |
Energy Absorption |
|
Nightfall can direct the tentacles or even darkness surrounding him (not
as easy to control) to absorb any energy they touch, even lifeforce. He
has used this attack to knockout opponents and suspects it could kill if
he allowed it. |
Form of Darkness |
|
Nightfall can become a living shadow capable of gliding silently along
surfaces, through the dark night, and the smallest crack. |
Shadow Walk |
|
Nightfall can step into one shadow and out of another. Nightfall doesn't
know the full range of this power and has only tried traveling for a few
blocks at most. When he steps into shadow, it is like going to another
plane of existence that mirrors our own with light and darkness in
negative and every shadow in our world is a portal in the plane of shadow
(he can peer out of shadows while in there). Nightfall is himself a portal
into the plane of darkness so entering can be done anywhere, to exit there
must be some shadow (to exit as a man it must be as large as him, to exit
as a shadow it can be pretty small). Traveling through that place takes
time but he can go a bit faster there, especially if he goes deeper into
"the darkness" (it isn't teleportation and at best is the speed
of a car now). Problem is he doesn't understand the place fully and it can
be disorienting, hence he doesn't go too far. He has taken a few items in
the darkness with him but never a living being (or anything close to it in
size) - given the icy cold condition of anything he has taken he doesn't
think a human would like even the shortest trip (it doesn't feel to him
that the world of shadow is cold, but it must be). |
Creepy |
|
Most people have at one point in their life a mild fear of the dark and
for some reason Nightfall is just plain creepy. Maybe it is the darkness,
the odd echoing voice, or the alien outer dimension feeling around him.
Whatever it is, the brave find him creepy and the cowardly will run in
abject fear. |

Weaknesses
|
Weakness |
Description |
Secret Id |
Thomas is keeping his powers secret until he can think of the
ramifications to his friends, family, and career. He lives alone and
travels extensively for his research and writing, but still there are
people who could be endangered. While it may help his career, he wants his
work accepted on its merit and not because he has powers. Right now he is
just trying to figure out his situation and doesn't want the hassle of
being publicly known. He is always careful to use shadow walk to separate
appearances of Nightfall and Thomas Bailey. |
Accidental Transformation |
 | When exposed to deep shadows or darkness, the darkness within calls
to it and mundane shadows want to join with Thomas and transform him
into Nightfall. It takes mental effort to silent the call and remain
Thomas, the darker the room the harder it is to resist and complete
darkness transforms him instantly. As a result it appears that Thomas
has a fear of the dark because of the amount of light in his house and
habitual avoidance of shadows. |
 | When endangered Thomas will transform into Nightfall as the darkness
within seeks to protect him. |
|
Unusual looks |
 | Thomas' eyes pupils are all black now (they used to be dark brown)
and seem a bit larger (less white) than they used to be. It is also a
bit darker around Thomas (the darkness likes him) barely noticeable
but it is there. |
 | Nightfall is just pain creepy. |
|
Unknown |
Unknown origin and purpose of powers. He doesn't understand it,
sometimes it does things (non-malicious) on it's own. Thomas doesn't
know what will happen to him and what he is/will become. |

Random Notes
 | Unlike most darkness related supers, Nightfall has no particular
vulnerability to light. As a matter of fact the darkness absorbs it just
fine. He normally doesn't operate during the day and wouldn't have any
trouble doing so. It would spoil the mood and theme of his powers to
blatantly appear in the light, so he hasn't. The night is his friend and
ally and aids in the generation of fear from the criminal element. |
 | Thomas/Nightfall is essentially a good guy and won't reckless endanger
anyone's life, even that of a villain. So he is careful in the application
of his powers preferring to entangle and tire rather than pummel and suck
out life energy. Maybe Nightfall would kill a truly vile being that couldn't
be stooped any other way, but that is fortunately something he has never
faced. |
 | Inspiration for Nightfall comes from Cloak, Batman, Spawn (nifty cloak),
and reading way too much horror over my life (especially Lovecraft). |

Initial Hero Activity
After getting his powers Nightfall did some research and practiced for
several weeks. At most there were odd sightings in Vancouver and
unexplained blackouts (actually Nightfall appearing near a light or accidentally
draining the power from a transformer).
One night while out practicing, he saw a couple being mugged and the
beginning of the rape of the woman. Outraged by the actions he descended
upon the group in a cloud of darkness. This was this was the first time he
discovered he could form the tendrils of darkness and drain energy from
people. At his less than pleasant touch the assailants were rendered
unconscious with a mild case of hypothermia. He quickly withdrew before
those he saved really knew what was going on. The assailants were taken to
the hospital and regained consciousness the next day, but suffered from
exhaustion for days after.
Nightfall now saw a purpose to his powers and started going out on regular
patrols (peering out of the world of shadow and moving about his
neighborhood). A few times he stopped some thugs and drug dealers.
One police report has something to the effect of "the darkness called my
name and I woke up here." A few criminals have been found webbed up
in something that looks like tar, but is almost impossible to break - eventually
dissolving.
Very recently Nightfall became aware of the presence of a methlab in his
area, and he decided it must go. He watched the place for a few nights
before making his move. First he cut the power to the building at the fuse
box and then descended upon the criminals therein. The police arrived
later because of the reported sounds of screams and gunshots. When they
arrived, the leader of the drug dealers surrendered to the police. The
terrified man confessed to just about everything he had ever done and begged to
be taken to a nice brightly lit jail. He was taken away muttering things
about "the darkness told me to confess my sins.... come for me if I
didn't...."
That night Nightfall learned a great many things. Errant gunfire
glanced off his body and the terror he inspired in their leader when he focused
his righteous wrath and otherworldly aura upon him was quite impressive.
The poor man might forever be frightened of the dark, but after what he saw and
heard while observing him, the man deserved it. As he has always known,
fear is a powerful tool. The public may not like him, but criminals will
learn to fear him and that is enough.

Writings of Thomas Bailey
Thomas is not the household name and TV commercial when a book comes out
level that is Stephen King. Thomas doesn't create the schlock that Stephen
King churns out - comparing them would Thomas weep. I remember when I was
reading a bunch of horror and aside from a few of his earlier short stories I
didn't find Stephen King very good or even creepy. Now an author that did
have me a little creeped out was Clive Barker.
Thomas produces carefully crafted and extremely creepy or frightening books -
all of them horror based but ranging in setting from the modern, historic,
fantasy, pulp, and sci-fi. It is unlikely any have been made into a movie
because he would demand complete creative control so they didn't ruin it, like
Hollywood does to so many books - you can make a call on that.
Thomas makes sure that each book is better than the last and takes what time
he feels is necessary. His publishers probably wish he would not be so
anal, but the books do well when they come out. Enough that Thomas makes a
good enough living at it to travel around the world investigating things (some
of it is expensed). He may even hit the best sellers occasionally, but his
books can occasionally be to disturbing or weird.
Thomas likes being scared (but it takes more these days) and scaring people
but not out of a malicious nature. Sometimes it takes fear (or some other
extreme psychological shock) to make people see things in a different way.
Thomas' work is rarely about trying to make someone see things his way, but
instead shake them up enough to open their mind a little to other
possibilities. "My father once told me that a close mind is an empty
mind. I just try to mentally kick someone in the nuts hard enough to open
their mind up due to the shock. Having nightmares for a few days is a
small price to pay."
