The back of Mrs. Smith's tarot cards were black and decorated with a silver pentangle. The pentangle is a very important occult symbol. Other names it has been known as are "The Druid's Foot" and "The Witch's Star". The Pentangle graphically represents the power of the Mind over Human Nature, or the elements.

The Five Metaphysical Elements of the Ancients are each represented by a specific angle of the pentangle.

Starting in the upper left and going counterclockwise:

Air, Earth, Fire, and Water with the topmost point being the graphic portrayal of the Spirit. Enclose the whole thing in a circle, symbol of eternity, unity, or totality, and the energy of the pentagram is focused and directed.
