MDR-17 Unicorn Civil Defence Robot
RPG Stats and Background by: Rick R. Mortis.

Technical Info from the Robotech Technical Files, by Robert Morgenstern.

BACKGROUND

The Unicorn was developed for riot control use in fear of mass hysteria with the exodus of the REF containing most of the Robotech mecha of the time. The Unicorn was developed for multi-purpose urban and base defence. It could perform construction and fire suppression duties as well as riot control and air defence. As such it filled a urban defence role as well as trying to replace the older MBR-07 Gladiator. While less armed, it was hoped that he smaller size and greater agility would offset this provided sufficient numbers of Unicorns were available. Also, due to the short range of the Unicorn's radar systems, it relies of linkage of surveillance data from air defence radars or other mecha to provide comparable range to the older Raider X.

The Unicorn is equipped with rubber soles and large feet to minimise damage to city streets and footpaths by spreading the force as much as possible. The Gas projector and grenade launcher ammunition would be changed depending on the unit's mission. For peace-time duties, mostly tear gas and smoke gas were used with some fire abatement loads also. For combat duties, the gas projector was usually loaded with nerve gas or smoke charges for defence, and more offensive grenade rounds were loaded.

Many hundreds of Unicorns were produced for the CDC, and put into service with CDC Units worldwide. Many of the were destroyed protecting Earth's cities from attacks by the Robotech Masters and the Invid.
