The Mage Circles
1st Circle:     These are mages who have finished their initial training and have only just started advancing in the ways of magic. These are recognised by a circle of magical runes on the left sleeve of the robes.
  (In AD+D terms they are 1st to 2nd level)

2nd Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 1st circle. They are generally seen as average mages, they often act as scribes. They are recognised by two circles of magical runes on the left sleeve of their robes.
  (In AD+D terms they are 3rd to 4th level)

3rd Circle:    These are mages who have managed to pass from the 2nd circle. They are seen as competent mages and many don't pass from this circle. They often take up court    duty and act as advisors to petty nobles. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on their left sleeve.
  (In AD+D terms they are 5th to 6th level)

4th Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 3rd circle. When mages reach this circle they really start to come into their own. They are often respected and    feared by the populous. Some stay in court duty and act as advisors to higher up nobility. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on their left sleeve and one circle of magical runes on their right sleeve.
  (In AD+D terms they are 7th to 8th level)

5th Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 4th circle. They have reached mid way through the circles and often start to go about their own things. Some stay in court duty and act as advisors to higher up nobles and county rulers. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on their left sleeve and two circles of magical runes on their right sleeve.
  (In AD+D terms they are 9th to 11th level)

6th Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 5th circle.
There is now no doubt as to their power and the respect that these mages can command. Some stay in  court duty and act as advisors to county rulers. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on each of their sleeves.
  (In AD+D terms they are 12th to 13th level)

7th Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 6th circle. They are put through a rigorous test    before being allowed to reach this level to determine their responsibility of power. Those who fail often leave the school to try and gain their power through other means. Those who have reached this circle have also maintained power within the school. They are eligible to vote on major events that may happen in regard to the school and some act as tutors to mages of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd circles. Some mages of this circle are the heads of the smaller schools of magic which are located in the larger towns. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on each sleeve and one circle   of magical runes on the bottom of their robes.
  (In AD+D terms they are 14th to 15th level)

8th Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 7th circle. They to are put through a rigorous test to establish their loyalty, responsibility and power. Some of these act as tutors to mages of the  4th, 5th and 6th circles. Some of the  mages of this circle are the heads of the larger schools of magic which are located within the cities. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on each sleeve and two circles of magical runes on the bottom of their robes.
  (In AD+D terms they are 16th to 17th level)

9th Circle:     These are mages who have managed to pass from the 8th circle. It is the highest circle that can be reached and a final test must be passed to get in to this circle.These have reached such power that even Kings respect them. Some are the heads of the largest schools. They are recognised by three circles of magical runes on each sleeve and on the bottom of their robes.
  (In AD+D terms they are 18th level and above)
