The country is ruled by the monarchy which is headed by the King. The
King is by far the most powerful person in the land and governs the countries
affairs. He is also the head of the Garaleyern church within Erland and
only the Apostle of the Holy Order of the Oak can overrule him on church
and religious matters. The King however rarely uses his influence in the
church and leaves it to be run by the church hierarchy.
Under the King are the nobles. The most powerful of the nobles are
the county rulers. Each of these rulers run a county, the lowest ranking
noble to run a county is a Baron. The county rulers have almost complete
say in matters concerning their counties and only members of the Royalty
can over rule them in such matters. The rulers govern the taxes within
their lands as well as the economy, the law and the militia, they do have
to tithe money to the King and this often effects the rates of their taxes.
Under the county rulers you have the other nobles who undertake the task
of overseeing parts of each counties as well as other holdings. The lowest
form of nobility is a that of the Knight and under him the squire. Most
of the Knights pay fealty to a noble of higher status and act in his service.
The squire serves the Knight and will one day be a Knight himself. The
title of Knight is allowed as well as another title of nobility.
Erland has perhaps the greatest military might within the corelands. Erlands Navy is particularly recognised and is unrivalled when it comes to skill and tactics in battle. The military is commanded by the Field Martial General and the Navy by the High Admiral of the Earlish Fleet both of whom report only to the King. Both of these positions are usually fulfilled by nobles with some experience in the field.
Erland is a part of the Garaleyern Continent which is also made up of
Ireneyer, Weneth and the Sarak Isles. With each of these other countries
Erland has strong economic ties and military alliances.
All of the countries of Garaleyer follow the Holy Order of the Oak
as their religion.
The Northwest of Erland
The Northwest of Erland is the biggest region in the country yet despite
this it has the least counties. The region has two cities within it, the
city of Burns and the city of Vordurn. Burns is a port city which lies
within the county (Dukedom) of Barrafield. It is an important city when
it comes to trade. It has strong trade routes with Sarak, Irenayer and
the Isle of Caragar. Vordurn lies within the County of Kenth and is a very
old city. It has strong ties with the nobility of the country where many
have a residence.
The North West has a large forest dominating known as Farral forest.
There is but one county that lies within the forest and that is the County
of Shallowdale which is in the east of the forest. The rest of the forest
belongs to the King and is mostly unexplored. There are many rumours that
deeper within the forest is haunted and thus mankind has stayed away.
Beyond the forest are the Counties of Kern and Thunington which are
cut of from the rest of the country by Farral Forest. They often have goods
shipped to them from the city of Carbury.
In the county of Kenth there is a henge of stones that was built long
back by the ancestors of the Earlish. It is said to be built upon a powerful
nexus where nine leylines met.
The Northeast of Erland
The Northeast is a very rural region with many large stretches of wilderness.
It has one city, the city of Seanand which lies within the county of Seasbury.
Seanand was once a great city where many ideas and inventions came
to realisation. It was once said that Seanand would one day usurp Errowdale
and become the countries new capital however that was never realised
as the city’s power began to wane. This was due to it once being a great
port city but as other port cities developed there was less need to use
Seanand by merchants and less wealth came into the city. Nowadays the city
has declined considerably. There is very little renewal within the city
and it has a high population of Rogues. The city does still however maintain
a large naval base.
Two counties of note in the Northeast are those of Darkmoor and Merrydown.
The families of Darkmoor and Merrydown have strong ties with the King and
their histories go back far.
Notable feature within the Northeast are the Kerring Mountain range,
a mostly unexplored mountain range due to their high peaks. Also originating
in the Kerring range is the Kerring river which is the very artery of the
country running the whole length of the land and providing a good trade
route throughout the country.
The Midlands of Erland
The midland regions holds the capital city Errowdale which lies within
the county of the same name. The King has his palace, Manning here though
he resides mostly in his castle, Tarey which lies further south. Errowdale
is under the direct rulership of the King but he leaves its running to
a council made up of Nobles, advisors and clerics. Errowdale is the largest
city in the land and is on the edge of Lake Darrowmere. It has much trade
passing through it from up and down the Kerring River and it gets much
of its supplies from down south.
The county of Harrowdale holds the city of Carbury, a small city that
has trade routes with the counties of Kern and Thunington and also with
the Isle of Caragar. Harrowdale once held the ancient Castle that belonged
to Kings Aldin I and Aldin II. This castle was once the capital of the
country. It is heavily debated as too where the castle was located, some
say it is where Carbury now lies yet others speak of it being further east
within the county.
The Southwest of Erland
Despite the fact the southwest has no cities many consider it to be
the most important region of Erland.
It contains the county of Oakshire which holds within its boarders
a great stretch of holy land. Oakshire has much of its boarders within
Oaks Forest which is the second largest forest in Erland after Farrel forest.
Oakshire is not ruled by a noble as it belongs to the Church of the Holy
Order of the Oak. The Apostle of the Oak is the ruler of this County.
Within the holy land lies that which is most sacred to the Holy Order,
the Oak itself. The Oak is of immense size and stature. Its bark is silver
and its leafs are gold. It is said that if a individual should receive
one of it silver acorns they are blessed indeed. The oak is the focal point
of the Garaleyern gods power. Surrounding the Oak is a Temple to each of
the gods and to the north a great Cathedral to the Holy Order of the Oak.
The Holy land is defended by two church ordained militias. Around the
Oak itself is stationed the Knighthood of the Oak, who are Clerics with
considerable combat expertise. They where black full plate armour with
a gold symbol of the oak on there breastplate and upon the shields they
bear the insignia of their order a golden leaf. The surrounding forest
is patrolled by the Seekers, a group of warriors with considerable wilderness
skills. They also bear on their cloaks a gold symbol of the oak and on
the left side of their chest they bear the symbol of their Order a silver
acorn. Each of the temples also have many Paladins within their walls.
To the west of the region is a mostly unexplored range of mountains
known as the Marsa Mountains. This area has a high population of Romani
who have settled here. Strange creature are said to reside in the mountain
range and there has been many disappearances over the years.
There has been a lot of development in the county of Kerningdale and
it is said that over the next hundred years a new city could rise in the
county.
The Southeast of Erland
The southwest boasts two great cities. First in the County of Shenning
lies the city of Coranth on the eastern shore. Coranth is another old city
that came about the same time as Vordurn. It is a small city with a great
wall around it. There is a lot of farmland stretching out from the city
and beyond that great peat land. The city itself still maintains many old
building which have been well preserved. The streets wind in circular patterns
which many foreigners to the city find very disorienting at first. It once
held a great naval base but that has since moved south to Salloway.
The second city Salloway lies within the county of Everly. It boasts
the largest docks in the country and has many trade routes which go up
the length of the country, to Weneth, to Caragar and its most important
routes down to the Continent of Saradown. It has a large naval base here,
the largest in the country and often the High Admiral of the Earlish Fleet
resides in the city.
The region has three areas of significant wilderness. To the south
are great expanses of rolling hills. The middle of the region contains
a large chunk of Oaks forest and to the north are the moors and peat bogs.
The Isle of Caragar
Caragar is a large island that lies between Erland and Irenayer. It
is large enough to be a small country in its own right but came under the
rulership of Erland. Erland has long disputed the ownership with Irenayer
and even in the past fought wars over the Isle. Although Erland rules the
isle it allows Irenayer, Weneth and Sarak to have a say in its running
and each country has a representative who maintains a castle there.
The Isle is most famous for being a place of learning. It has many
Universities here covering a wide range of subjects. The most famous is
the School of Magic. Many people far and wide come to the school in the
hope of learning magic. Many fail. The school is a very powerful organisation
throughout Erland and Irenayer and has many facilities throughout the major
towns and cities of both countries.
Caragar also boasts a large Cathedral to the God Math Mathonwy who
is the God of Science, learning and magic.
The Isle’s best known however for its libraries. Its libraries cover
many subjects and it has books in many languages. The greatest library
lies beneath the School of magics main building and the Cathedral of Math
Mathonwy in a large expanse of caverns. Some say that it was Math himself
who set these up.
