The City

When the lights go down
In tree people's town
And silence roams the streets
And the Sandman spreads
his grain on all heads
To grant them all dreams sweet
In the far out distance
Just over the hills
That deck the thin horizon
There comes the first instance
Of colors and thrills
Of shouts and songs arising
The City has now awoken
The calm has now been broken
Excitement charges the air
The city people dance
To the beats of night romance
And worship the night with great care
While the city breathes its life
And the people run and dance
With the stars and the moon and the sounds
The son of a Treeman's wife
Awakes to capture a glance
Of the cryptic wonders on those grounds
He gapes through the glass
And sees all that he has
Been told is a lie and untrue
Fear takes a good grip
Of his tongue and his lip
As he swears not to tell of this view
He lies down to slumber
And prays to his lord
The mighty keeper of the forest
To erase tonight's number
That promotes discord
And that he and his people abhor best
If they would only look
And try not to be shook
By the spectacle of the city's glow
Maybe they would adore her
Or still fear and abhor her
But at least what they'd feared they'd now know
For knowing is the key
To all life and beyond
The key to the stars and their light
To know is to be free
To break through that bond
Of ignorance and into the night
