Today, the Khabarovsk Krai is a large center for academic, institute and branch science. The Khabarovsk scientific center, the Far East Branch of the Academy of Sciences of Russia and the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Agriculture are situated here, as well as the branches of the Academy of Medicine of Russia. Eight institutes of the Russian Academy of Science and 26 branches of scientific research institutes also work in the Krai.
The Khabarovsk Branch of the Institute of Applied Mathematics is working on a number of specific problems oi modern mathematics and is also known for its important works on school information sciences and banking.
The Institute of Tectonics and Geophysics studies the structure and evolution of continent-ocean junction zones, the lithosphere of the Far East, peculiarities of its structure and its development in connection with the general regularities of mineral resources distribution, and also magmatic formations and the presence of ore in them, as well as the structure and evolution of oil and gas bearing areas of the Russian Far East.
The Institute of Water and Ecological Problems studies the regularities of surface and underground water formations of the Far East ecosystems.
The Institute of Economic Research works out problems of the Russian Far East development with regard to its role in the total country system, the conditions of the Asian Pacific regions, the theory and methodology of improving regional planning and management and the economic problems of nature. The Institute prepares programs of the Far Eastern economic regional development, improving the economic and mathematical simulations and prognosis affecting major trends of the timber policy and other key economic branches.
The Far Eastern Institute of Market Economy is established in Khabarovsk, with the main area of research in the problems of transition to the market economy in the Russian Far East with regard for the specific conditions of the region.
Other institutes of branch science are working on a number of applied tasks.
38 thousand students study at 14 institutes including Khabarovsk State Technical University and the Far East State Academy of Transportation. 24 thousand students study at 28 colleges and vocational schools and 18 thousand students obtain job training in 47 different professional technical schools. At the present time, students from the Republic of Korea, the USA, China, Japan and other countries study in many institutes within the Krai.
