1. What is #martial?

#martial is an Internet Relay Chat channel on Undernet that is dedicated to discussing anything that is related to martial arts.
top

2. How do I get to #martial?

You can get to #martial by obtaining an IRC client program such as mIRC or pIRCh. Set it up and connect to any Undernet server (there is usually a list of servers for several IRC nets). Then type /join #martial . It's that easy.
top

3. What do I do when I get to #martial?

Saying hello is always a good opener. Most of the regulars bow into the channel when they enter. Just be friendly and things should go smooth for you.
top

4. Who is X?

X is a bot (a script run by another computer) that channel service provides to each of it's registered channels to help maintain order within the channel. It keeps the channel open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Users can send commands to X. The level a user is, determines what type of commands that user can do.
top

5. Who is Kaze?

Kaze is another bot. The ops of #martial use Kaze to be in DCC contact with each other and to provide some extra security for the channel. We hope to add features to it that will be even more beneficial to our regular users.
top

6. Why do some people have @ in front of their nick?

The @ indicates that person is a channel operator (op). Ops help keep things running smoothly. They do their best to enforce the rules of #martial and to protect the channel from hackers. They have varying amounts of martial arts experience and computer experience. They also help with the "behind the scenes" tasks that help #martial users get the most out of our channel. They are all volunteers.
top

7. Why do some people have + by their nick?

The + is given to ops that are in training and to users that have registered with us. Registered users are entitled to any special benefit that we may have. For instance, if we had an issue that we wanted the users to vote on, we would only let registered users vote on it. We want to provide our registered users with as many benefits as we can. The + is usually given to people in moderated channels so they can have a voice in that channel - only ops and voiced users will be able to say anything in the main channel. We give it to encourage others to register too.
top

8. Why is nobody talking?

Several things could be causing this.
1) Many of the regular users have been around a long time. As much as we like to talk about martial arts, it just isn't possible to do so all the time. So sometimes our attention is diverted from the channel.
2) We have several people that like to come in and lurke (not say anything but watch what goes on) or we may have someone that had to do something and is away from their keyboard.
3) One of the jobs of the ops is to help people. We also have made good friends with each other. So we might be in private conversation with people.
4) We might be experiencing lag.

These are the main reasons for nothing going on in channel but if you try talking martial arts then we usually try to get involved. Talking is the best way to battle this.

9. What is "LAG"?

LAG is an ugly monster that attacks IRC. It's caused by heavy traffic on the net. The servers of a net are linked so that some servers must go through other servers in order for everyone to be connected. Heavy traffic and great distances can cause things to slow down to the point of taking several minutes for messages to processed. You can check to see if you're lagged by pinging someone. If the reply is more than 10 seconds, one of you is lagged. If it is more than 30 seconds then it's time for one of you to change servers. If you ping everyone and their replies are taking a long time to return, then you are probably the one that is lagged. It's very annoying at times because someone that is lagged may be disrupting the conversation by answering messages that were several minutes ago.
top

10. How do I stop LAG?

The only way for LAG to be stopped is for everyone to be connected to the same server. Since this isn't very practical, you can do a few things to cut down excessive lag.
1) you can try changing servers.
2) you can wait it out until it gets better (good luck).
3) get in DCC contact with people. This will keep you and the person you are in contact with from being lagged even though you might be lagged in the channel. 4) you can cut down on some of the traffic by not pinging so much or other types of requests from other computers.
top

11. What are the hours of #martial?

Thanks to X, #martial is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If X gets netsplit or shutdown then you might join #martial and find that you are the only person there and an op as well. If this happens, just de-op yourself and/or wait and things will return to normal sooner or later. Even though the channel is normally open all the time, there are certain times that you will find only you and the bots there. Just wait a little while and someone will usually show up.
top

12. What is a "PING"?

A "PING" is signal sent to your computer. This signal expects a reply from your computer. If it doesn't reply quickly enough, then the computer initiating the ping will assume that your computer is not responding and disconnect you. You can send a "PING" request to another computer but you will not be disconnecting it. If the response from this type of "PING" is too long, then you are experiencing lag.

13. What do the abbreviations mean?

Like most close knit groups, we have our own abbreviations for things. Some are martial art oriented and others are IRC oriented. If you come across one you don't know, ask. Here are a few of the more common ones:
LOL = Laughing Out Loud ROFL = Rolling On Floor Laughing
ROFLMAO = Rolling On Floor Laughing My Ass Off brb = be right back
ib = I'm back afk = away from keyboard
bbl = be back later MA = Martial Art
TKD = Tae Kwon Do JKD = Jeet Kun Do
j/k = just kidding BJJ = Brazilian JuJitsu
GJJ = Gracie JuJitsu NHB = No Holds Barred
DCC = Direct Client to Client np = no problem
wb = welcome back ltns = long time no see
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion

14. What is ":)" and other similar symbols?

This is called an "emoticon". It is a symbol used to express feeling. All you have to do is tilt your head to the left and you will see that it is a smile. Here's a few more commonly used ones:
:-) = smile ;) = wink :( = frown :o = surprise }:) = evil grin 8) = person with glasses or goofy grin
top

15. Why do I see numbers mixed in with the text?

This means you are using an IRC client program that does not support colors from other users. Try downloading the latest version of mIRC or pIRCh.
top

16. How do I do colors?

If your IRC client program supports the use of colors, then you can do colors by typing CTRL + K followed by a number between 0 and 15. To change the background of your text, put a comma after the number then another number between 0 and 15. To underline, type CTRL + U. To make it bold, type CTRL + B. To make it flash, type CTRL + F. If you only want one word a certain color, then put the CTRL + [command] after that word.
top

17. How do I do sounds?

To play sounds, type /sound [nick/channel] . You can either play it to a certain person or to the whole channel. You can play either a wav or a midi file. To hear a sound you need to go into options and make sure that you are accepting sound requests, you need to make sure you have the sound (you can also be notified if you don't), and you need to make sure that your client program is looking in the right directory for the sound.
top

18. How do I send/receive files?

You can do this with DCC. Click on the nickname of the person you are wanting to send the file to. Right mouse click on that nickname so that you see a menu popup. Find DCC on that menu and then select SEND. Select the file you want to send and then send it. It's fairly easy. If you are wanting to receive files, make sure that your DCC OPTIONS knows where to put the file and also make sure that you allow resuming. This is helpful when you lose your DCC connection in the middle of a transfer. It's also a good idea not to auto accept any type of DCC. Only accept a DCC from someone you know.
top

19. How do I talk in private with someone?

You can do this in several ways.
  1. type /msg [nickname] [message]
  2. DCC CHAT with the person
  3. type /notice [nickname] [message]
  4. type /query [nickname]

All of these commands will send a message only to the other person. The /query command can bring up a window for just that person. This can also be done by double clicking their nickname. You can also choose the option of having all messages go to a "message" window. Only accept a DCC from someone you know.

20. What do I do if someone is bothering me?

I recommend logging everything. This way you can send the log of someone bothering you to one of our ops so that we can decide what to do. If you don't get a chance to get a log, at least let an op know of what's going on. We shouldn't be doing anything without evidence of an offense so a log will help speed things up. Please let the ops handle it though. Also, you can put the person on /ignore and/or /silence and you won't be able to see anything they say. If all else fails, you might just leave and come back later. If you have a problem with an op, you should let Mascotte or me know about it as soon as possible. We would prefer you resolve any issues with that person, but if you feel you can't then please come to us for help. If you have a problem with me, let me know it so that I can do what I can to resolve the issue. If no other op is around, go to #cservice for help.

21. Why don't people like all capital letters?

HOPEFULLY YOU KNOW BY NOW THAT IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE SHOUTING AND IS VERY HARD ON THE EYES. YOU SHOULD ONLY USE ALL CAPS WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY WITH SOME ONE OR WHEN YOU ARE EMPHASIZING SOMETHING. SO PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T USE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS BECAUSE IT IS REALLY, REALLY ANNOYING.
top

22. Why did I get kicked out?

Well you probably did something that you weren't supposed to. It may have been because you did not show respect to someone or someone's style. It may have been because you were using foul language. It may have been because you were flooding or hacking in some way. It may have been because of an error. If it was no error, then consider it your first warning.
top

23. Why did I get banned?

You may not have actually been banned. It may be that your ISP was banned because someone from your ISP decided to be an ass and cause trouble. Send me an e-mail if you think you have been unfairly banned or even if you just can't get in because of somebody else. You will be banned if you continue causing trouble after you have been previously warned. We will only ban you for a max of 2 weeks. After that time, you may re-join #martial. As long as you do not cause trouble then you may stay and enjoy yourself. If you continue to be a trouble maker, you will go on our blacklist and you will be kicked and banned at the very first sign of any trouble from you.
top

24. What is "FLOODING"?

Flooding is when someone sends too much data to another computer. Sometimes it is done unintentionally. This is an annoying disruption of service tactic and will not be tolerated in any form. If you're sending a lot of lines to the channel, pause every so often to prevent this.
top

25. Why isn't Martial Arts being discussed?

Most people that come to #martial, come there on a regular basis. We have become friends with each other and tend to be more concerned with how they are and cutting up wtih them than talking MA with them because we've probably already discussed each others styles and views. Don't be alarmed by this or think we are trying to start trouble. If you want to discuss MA then start discussing MA. Most of us will stop cutting up and discuss anything related to MA. Don't be afraid of saying something because we are not out to discredit any style or phylosophy. In other words, we usually do not flame anyone.
top

26. What is a "NETSPLIT"?

A netsplit is when one or more servers gets disconnected from the rest of the network. You will see two servers listed in the QUIT message. You will also see people start disappearing. Be patient though. They will all return when that server reconnects to the network. Please report any unusual activity during this period such as some unknown person getting op'd.

27. How do I do an action?

to do an action type /me [action].
top

28. How can I not have to type so much?

You can use popups, remotes or events, and aliases. A popup is done by right mouse clicking so that a menu "pops up" and you can choose a command. An alias is the keyboard equivalent. The remote or event is commands that your computer looks for and then performs function associated with that command. You can set any of these on your own. I like to use popups more, but you may like something different. To program your own stuff in then look in your help file or find an op and we will help you. Please DO NOT use remotes much because it can bog down the system. HELPFUL HINT: make a popup with your style on it. It'll get used a lot.
