You head toward the living cavern.
Living Cavern at the Edge of No Weyr(#15RJ)
Set in a natural cave at the far end of the complex which serves as the Weyr proper, the cave is small by the standards of the mainland Weyrs. Here, however, it is huge, especially given the silent but tangible absence of so many. Although there are tables for weyrleaders, seperate wings, weyrlings, candidates, and weyrfolk, most all sit up at the first few tables, leaving the majority empty. Natural vents circulate fresh air constantly, the temperature slightly cooler than outside. A night hearth is set aside in a niche with the everpresent stew, klah and rolls. Around mealtimes in the main area a serving table is set up from where inhabitants or visitors can serve themselves with food or drink suitable to the time of day.
To the east is the exit leading toward the bowl. The entrance to the infirmary lies to the southeast, while to the west is a passage leading to the staff and resident quarters.

Kava sighs, shaking her head. "I haven't met anyone yet except you, Marla and the rider that brought me here. I hadn't lived in a weyr before Who Knows."
Jerekan wanders in, whistling tunelessly. "Hello!" He calls cheerily. He hears Kava, though, and grins, noting, "I'm Jerk...So now you know me, too." He slides into a seat beside Kisara and pokes her on the shoulder, stage-whispering, "Are you still at least somewhat sane?"
Kava turns toward the boy. "Jerk? Um...Hi, Jerk."
Kisara raises her eyebrows, "You must be in some amount of turmoil then, my condolences," fork then stabs at a torn bit of bread and runs it through the spice remnants on her plate. The Kisara pauses and slowly turns her head towards Jerekan, "You!"
"...You -said- I couldn't drink Wine, Jerk!" Kisa is beyond angry at her friend, you can see the invisible fumes coming out of her head, "why did you -lie-?!"
Jerekan gasps melodrammatically at Kisara, nodding solemnly. "Yes, it is I... Your one and only Jerk." Or so he'd like everyone to think...Rumors, rumors. Beware a troublemaking Jerk. He grins at Kava, and nods. "Hello, and well met, whoever you are." He blinks in surprise at Kisara. "But...You...can't..." Now he's just confused.
Kava blushes. "Always forgetting to introduce myself. I'm Kava."
Justine approaches from the east.
Justine has arrived.
Justine peers inside. Candidates. Chores?!
Kisara nods and points over at Marla, "She just informed me that I could as long as I didn't do it in excess and doesn't effect my chores." She hmphs at Jerekan and stabs the last of the roots on her plate to devour. Washing it down with a quaff of water she remarks, "I'm too happy about it to be angry at you though."
Jerekan laughs out loud...Actually, roars would be a bit more accurate. "/You/ not drink in excess?!" Bwahahahaha. That roaring wears off after a few minutes, then Jerk just collapses in a fit of giggles.
Justine quirks an eyebrow, and mutters as she passes, "Drinking wine in the middle of the day is asking for a headache and there's never an excuse for sitting around on your butt!" She stops peers at Jerekan, "What chores were you assigned?
Kava whips her head around. Her hair, not quite dry, sprays some droplets.
Jerekan blinks in surprise and returns to his seat, smiling sweetly at Justine. "Tuber peeling, I believe." His smile brightens. Isn't he sweet? Isn't he angelic?
Kava's go wide. "Are we supposed to be doing chores?"
Justine nods, "So, candidate, where's the tubers?" she asks and then nods to Kava, "You expected to be sat on your butt for several sevendays doing nothing nad letting the weyr feed you for nothing?" she asks.
Kisara glances at Jerekan sideways with a cinderous expression, "Please.. I can -too-." Towards Justine she bobs her head and glass of water in hand, tells her, "I've got kitchen duties as well."
Marla says gently "I think Kava is a new arrival, though. I haven't seen her before today, at any rate, and she seems rather dazed."
Kava swallows hard. "Of course not. I just got here. Umm...I was discussing chores with Kira."
Kisara snorts ruefully, "Well, I just took my last bite of breakfast.. I'll be going to get the tubers as soon as I swallow it all," not to be disrespectful or anything but a girl must eat.
Justine beams at Marla, "Well then, we'd better let her have the standard introduction to weyrlife. Greens or tubers?" she asks the woman, glancing between her and the candidate. She shakes her head, "Candidates these days. Expect everything and nothing in return. Better hope you don't impress!" she murmers
Sydne approaches from the staff and resident quarters.
Sydne has arrived.
Jerekan is still smiling brightly at Justine as he explains, "I had just walked into the caverns, Weyrlingmaster, and I stopped to introduce myself to Kava, since she has only just arrived." Beam. He glances up at Sydne's entrance and waves cheerily. "I'll go bring your tubers, too, Kisa." He mutters before striding off to go get them. He can carry them all, really.
Kava shakes her head. "I'm happy to do my share of work. I just didn't know what to do."
Kisara giggles and stands up to go get some tubers from Drusha, muttering towards Jerk, "It looks like they assigned us to the same chores, we should thank our stars it isn't anything outside," sweat has been known to ruin nice clothes. She watches him whizz by her to get the tubers and then shrugs, "Oh.. okay," Sydne is waved at.
Sydne stretches - it is, really, not all that late in the day. After scraping hair back out of her face, she returns Jerk's wave with a morning smile. "Hi!" Yeah.
Kava stands, walking toward Justine. "What chore shall I start with?"
Jerekan nods in agreement to Kisara before bouncing off to get those tubers... After a moment he comes bouncing out.. Well, sort of, carrying an awfull lot of tubers.. He heads in the general direction of Kisara, then...Hey, who put that bench there? Tumble, crash, oof.
Justine waves towards the general kitchen area, "There's plenty of greens that need preparing" she remarks, then adds with a smile, "Why don't you start there so you can sit and talk and get to know people?" As Jerekan does his amazing tumbling trip she backs out of the way and just stands there, hand on hip, looking down her nose at the candidate.
Kisara is suddenly drowned in tubers flying her way, all over her lap, rolling down her knees. She gapes at Jerekan for a second without a word and then just starts laughing, "Hooo boy.. what a wherry, Jerk! Shards that was a classic.. I'll never -ever- forget that one!"
Kava nods. "Certainly." She walks toward the kitchen.
Sydne jumps back, a stifled giggle erupting as Jerekan crashes to the floor. "Ooops." She murmurs, more to herself, 'tsk'ing and shaking her head. Not that she's serious.
Kava walks into the kitchen.
Kava goes home.
Kava has left.
Jerekan is flat on his stomach, lying on a few tubers, surrounded by tubers, with tubers covering most of his body... He ignores Kisara's laughing and looks up, grabbing a tuber before smiling nervously at Justine. "Err... Got a knife?"
Justine quirks an eyebrow as she continues looking down, "And just what are you going to do with all " she gestures to the myraid of fallen tubers, "these tubers, lad?"
Kisara crouches down off of her chair to grab the discarded bowl and turn it upright, "Better get it cleaned up, anyhow..." can decide what to do with them later.
Alai approaches from the east.
Alai has arrived.
Jerekan smiles brightly at Justine. "Peel them?" He ventures, shrugging as best he can, lying on his stomach with tubers covering most of his poor self.
Alai drifts Kisara's way, playing with her skirt the way she had the night before. "...What happened to him?"
Kisara grins up at Alai while holding the bowl and plucking tubers off the ground to plunk back into it, "He had a little accident, poor jerk," she says with a smirk.
Sydne scoots around the tuber mess to an open table, pushing aside dirty mugs. A seat is taken, and she turns to peer back at Justine. Peel. "I suppose it's good that there's Candidates around to help with tuber peeling.." That way she doesn't have to do it all.
Justine shakes her head sadly at Jerekan, "Well, you can peel those, and some more for the rest of us, I'm not sure I want food from the floor. Then" she pauses, considering, "you can eat those tubers yourself for every meal until you finish them."
Alai sits blankly on the bench, skirt swishing to fall about her heels. "Oh. Oh, no. The poor boy."
The smirk falls off of Kisara's face and she blunders, "But, WeyrlingMaster, that's cruel!" It was only an accident.. Jerk can't help it if he's a clutz.
Justine blinks at Kisara, "You're asking to join him?" she asks
Kisara looks at Jerk and then back at Justine, "He didn't know the bench was there and I don't mean any disrespect... but that's a -lot- of tubers."
Jerekan just blinsk at Justine. "Eat them? All?" Woe. Oh Woe. "But I don't even like tubers when they /aren't/ from the floor..." Whine. He glances up at Kisara, nodding vigorously. "Yeah! It's too cruel..."
Sydne merely watches. Better that than to get involved in eating a mound of tubers, right? An arm reaches across the table to snag a cleanish mug, and the semi-warm klah pot.
Alai mentions brightly, "Add enough pepper, and nobody will even notice the dust."
Justine grins broadly, "Isn't it just!" She shrugs, "Next time he'll look, can't be thinking of wasting food nor of what clumsy people would be alike around dragonets." Eyes flash as she considers Jerekan, "You want cruel?!"
Kisa gazes at Justine for a moment incredulously, "No room for mistakes around here," she mutters and then goes back to gathering the tubers, murming, "Sorry Jerk..."
Jerekan sighs heavily. "But I was just trying to be nice and helpfull and bring Kisa her tubers, too!" Woe. Blue eyes twinkle merrily for a moment as he smiles up at Kisara. "...So it's partly her fault, too." Hmph. No room for mistakes indeed.
Alai just happens to get up and walk out of the line of fire. "Is your name Sydne?" she asks that girl, once she's close enough.
Kisara doesn't reply to Jerekan's accusal, she knows he is grasping at reeds. She quickly goes about throwing the dirty tubers in the bowl not daring to look upwards.
Justine nods, "So next time you'll know not to offer to do other people's chores for them" she says looking at Jerekan, "won't you? Potential dragonriders can't ask others to do work for them, there's a reason for it."
Sydne nods, peeking up from her intent klah preparation. "Oh. Yes, that's me?" She doesn't sound entirely too sure. "You'd be..?"
Alai hovers around the klah pot. "Alai. I don't remember you from last time but," a soft laugh, "That means little. I ... well, I cooked, over at Forsaken."
Sydne 'oh's! Something clicks. "Oh!" A hint of recognition, maybe? "How long had you been there? I might've seen you around."
Alai wonders, "At Forsaken? Or here? If there, oh, Turns and Turns, it seems like now, but then it would."
Jerekan grinds his teeth, resting his chin on his fist. Hrm. "But I wasn't trying to do her chores for her... I was just making sure she didn't go get her tubers herself..." He pauses, then eventually adds, "...Since she's drunk. Who knows what would've happened to those tubers if /she/ had gotten them." He mutters up at Justine, "You'd better watch her closely, if you let her /near/ a winesking she'll guzzle it all faster than you can say wherryfeathers!"
Sydne chuckles, sipping at the lukewarm klah she added a mound of sweetener to. "Well, I'm so sorry if I don't recognize you right away? I've probably met you, though.."
Justine nods slowly to Jerekan, "Well, just you watch out for yourself, I'll watch out for her, and if she's drunk, well, I'm sure I can think of some suitable punishment for her, so don't you be worrying yourself over that."
Alai adds with a hint of a blush, "I did ask someone, earlier, and they said. I wanted to be sure, first. Is there any left in the pot?"
Sydne smiles brightly, reaching over to grab the pot again. "It's not exactly all that warm," She warns.
Alai clicks her tongue. "Not /warm/? Well... well, all right. So you're a baker, now?"
Jerekan sighs heavily, glaring daggers at Kisara. He'll get her for this... Definitely. "Fine. Fiiiine." Sigh.
Sydne nods, testing her own klah with a poked finger. "Baker, yep. Well, sort of. I still end up doing non-baking things." She gestures over to Jerekan and Kisara. "Like peeling tubers."
Justine nods, "Much better. Now, you can tell cook that I asked her to make that special sauce she does so well, and you can have all of that with your tubers. I swear you won't worry about eating them then!" See? She's not all bad. Just mostly bad.
Alai guesses, "Part of baking, even if it's not the /fun/ parts." She wriggles into a sigh, then pours a cupful of her own. "Would you tell me what it's like sometime, a little later? Not now."
Kisara is still totally stunned by Jerekan's comment, "I.. but.. I don't have to explain myself to anyone," huffs Kisa. She just ate breakfast and really hasn't had the time to touch a wineskin anyhow. The girl fumes and stops picking up the tubers and goes to ask Drush for a different bowl.
Sydne chuckles, taking another drink from her mug. "Oh. Sure." Nod. "Why not now, can I ask?" she grins cheekily.
Jerekan just siiiighs. "Thank you, Weyrlingmaster." And he's even sort of polite, sometimes. He sits up and starts peeling those tubers, right there on the floor. He glances up at Kisara, blue eyes cold, for once, and /glares/. Grumble.
Alai says with another little sigh, "Just to draw it out a little. So I can look forward to it, you see? And there are the tubers and everything, so everyone else is talking, not that I would want to have everyone listening, but there are just times and places and... that sort of thing."
Kisara didn't catch the glare as her back was turned as she took another bowl from Dru, silently she winds her way back towards the candidates table, grabbing a knife on the way there. Silently; She peels each tuber, imagining morbidly that it's Jerekan's skin, heh, what a traitor.
"Oh." Sydne sees the picture. Maybe. "Okay." She turns again to glance at the tuber-proceedings. "But, I suppose," And she did mention earlier. "That it's nice to have extra hands to help."
Justine flickers a look over her shoulder and then back into the living cavern. One, two, three, all of those. She tilts her frame to see around Alai a little better and squints at Sydne.
What an unbelievably treacherous traitor... Jerk's gonna get her back, somehow, though... That's alright, though, since Jerekan seems to be enjoying peeling those tubers a bit too much...
Alai has a sip of her klah--and then murmurs under her breath, and adds some sweetening of her own. A little louder, not much, "I don't know if we'll get to, though. They say, sometimes, we should do duties that aren't what we're used to."
Sydne quirks a one-shouldered shrug, setting her mug back onto the table. "Oh. Well, I don't see why not." Her grin turns a slight bit more mischevious. "It helps share the load."
Alai smiles. "It does. Someday... someday maybe we'll get to Search the Weyrs for something."
Kisara continues peeling her tubers quietly, leaning into the job and humming something a tad out of tune.
Justine rolls her eyes at something, then frowns, walking around the living cavern. "Can't walk, too young." She stops, points to one resident, "You, outside now, please" then continues walking, "And you, you and you" she says gently pushing past Alai to point to Synde. "Outside now!"
Sydne glances up to Justine, startled. "Um, what?" Hand defensively reaches for the klah mug, for all the good it'll do her.
Justine smiles, "Outside!" she repeats, then gestures to Alai, "You too please" and with that she turns on her heel and walks out.
Justine heads outside.
Justine has left.
Jerekan glares at Kisara again before returning to peeling those tubers. He starts whistling, just as tunelessly.
Alai sidles back a little as Justine moves by, a hint of firestone and dragon-scent trailing behind her. And -- all right, gets up and goes after.
Alai murmurs to Sydne, "It's all right. He warbled or whatever he did in the way in. Maybe it's just chores."
Sydne meekly jumps up from the table, carrying the mug. "O-kaay.." At least the rider smiled. And she goes.
Alai heads outside.
Alai has left.
Sydne heads outside.
Sydne has left.
Miranda has arrived.
Kisara is peeling tubers quietly at the other end of the table, furthest from Jerekan. She is inherently engrossed in the peeling, blue eyes fixated upon the tuber as if no one else exists.. a little smile curls her lip.
Jerekan is seated on the floor, in the middle of a mess of tubers. He's peeling those tubers as qucikly as possible... Though his attention is mostly fixed on Kisara. /Glare/.
Marachi approaches from the east.
Marachi has arrived.
Miranda wanders in from the kitchen, tunic damp, hands wrinkly. She waves at any candidates she sees, and slips into a chair. She doesn't know these candidates well, so she just watches for now.
Alai approaches from the east.
Alai has arrived.
Sydne approaches from the east.
Sydne has arrived.
Marachi smiles at the candidates clustered in the Living Cavern. "Hello."
Sydne comes back in with Marachi and Alai, looking a bit bewildered. "And, um, hi." A small wave is offered, while she sets her near-empty mug on a table.
Alai follows after, murmuring, "More things to carry."
Alai heads for the staff and resident quarters.
Alai has left.
Marachi turns to the other candidates. "I'm Marachi. And you all are?"
Jerekan is still peeling those tubers, and glaring at Kisara. He does hear Marachi though and turns to her, muttering, "Jerk." Seems somebody's not his normally cheery self...
Miranda smiles up with a wave. "Miranda, from Forsaken. Hi," she slumps in her chair... hrm klah. So far away.
Alai approaches from the staff and resident quarters.
Alai has arrived.
Marachi grins at the other candidates, even Jerekan. "Well, I'm glad to have met you all. I hate to have to run, now, but I have to help move some stuff to the candidate quarters, so I'll see you all around."
Sydne smiles again at Alai, throwing glances outside. "I, um, suppose I should be moving things too." She dissapears off to the resident quarters.
Marachi heads for the staff and resident quarters.
Marachi has left.
Alai smiles, "Then we're ready, then."
Alai heads for the staff and resident quarters.
Alai has left.
Miranda blinks at all the new people. So many she doesn't know.
Kisara sighs a little at Jerekan's manners and offers lightly, "I'm Kisa, nice to meet you." She gets bit of peel on her shirt and quickly swipes it away so as not to leave any marks on he precious clothes. She finally turns to stare at Jerekan, "What is -wrong- with you?"
Jerekan turns back to his tubers and starts whistling again. He didn't hear nothin'.
Kisara sniffs at him and replies to the silent treatment she receives, "I thought you were older than me, Jerk.. how childish." She turns her head flippantly towards Miranda and introduces, "I'm Kisa... Are you done with your chores?" She continues peeling, moslty looking at her hands.
Miranda slips over to get some klah, peering at Kisara and Jerekan. Ponders, then decides to sit a little away from them. They're busy.
Jerekan glances up at Kisara, then, sticks out his tongue, and /pbbbts/. Traitor. Hmph.
Sydne heads outside.
Sydne has left.
Miranda smiles over at Kisara. "I'm Miranda. Yes, I was on dishwashing. It's finished for now anyway."
