What's MIDI?

MIDI (short for Musical Instrumnet Digital Interface) is a music industry standard communications protocol that lets MIDI instrustment and sequencers (or computers running sequencer software) talk to each other to play and record music.

MIDI history

This protocol was developed in 1983 in an unprecedented display of cooperation between the major music industry electronic instrument manufacturers including Roland, Sequential Circuits (now absorbed into Yamaha), Yamaha, Kong and others.

MIDI usage

MIDI allows electornic devices (ex. Synthesizers, Computers, light show controllers, VCRS, Multi-track recorders,etc.) to interact and work in synchronization with other MIDI compatible?devices. MIDI alow a the professional musiciian to create music much faster now that he/ she has the ability to be a one-person orchestra. MIDI has opened the world of electronic music to the amateur musician/recordist, allowing them in the professional music industry. A musician plays a performance (usually into a MIDI keyboard or drum machine). Thr instrutment interprets the performance and translates it to a language a computer can understand. The performance is then stored on recording studio type software. 256 tracks are available to record on.

Perform & Record - Play/sing along with emsemble, duets, trios,concertos, somgs (with lyrics)
Low Price - cheaper and easier than tapes. It takes only a second to start a file, cue to a section, etc.

What do I need to play MIDI songs?

Hardware:

A Multimedia Computer (PC with sound card) OR A Dedicated Sequencer/ Synthesizer OR Computer connected to a Sound Module/ Keyboard by a MIDI Interface

Sequecer Software:

There are some software that is delivered to MAC, PC compatible and Atari users and support a 11 major sequencers and keyboards. Windows users can play standard MIDI file with the Media Player. To gain all the control MIDI offers, I recommend a sequencer that can mute tracks, transpose, dispaly and print the score.

Does your computer campatible to MIDI sequence? There are some plug-in software to download which can enable your computer to detect to signals of MIDI.

It can be use in Nevigator, Internet Explorer,and Window NT.

If you are a window user and your browser cannot automatically play a sequence or a queue of sequence (eg, MAC users), SEE HERE!
